Power steering pump

I installed a PS pump on my 97 f350 w/460 last month. I bought one from Oreilly's. All they offer is a reman. Whine's pretty good. Does anyone make a better one that doesn't whine. Truck is 4x4 and has 37's. Maybe they'll all whine.

Saginaw pump by GM is a perfect, non-whining ps pump that our trucks can be converted to, but don't know if a write-up exist for the 460.

What did you use for power steering fluid? I'm not sure, but I assume these would still call for type F automatic transmission fluid, not regular power steering fluid.

All you need to find is a 460 powered E-Series van in the scrap yard. Pull the whole pump and bracket assembly with the lines and you should be good to go.

I used ATF for fluid. When I get a day off I'll see what my local salvage yard has for a bracket off a van. I looked and it seems like a new pump, pulley and lines are reasonable from a parts store. What motor and years of van bracket will fit my 97 460?

How many miles in that month? Note in box states can take 500 mile break in.

Want a better pump yea not a bad thing, run large tires yea gonna need one but a unnecessary expense if run stock tires and its a road runner. If so give it a little time to fully break in and make sure you purged it well you know turn and hold briefly at full lock both directions couple three times.

And yea if you ran anything but type F trans fluid it will squeal, for silent operation must be 100% type F nothing added in with it.

I've put over a 500 miles on it so far and used Type F. I think it's just the strain of the 37's. I'll swing in to the local yard when I get a day off next week. Thanks guys.

You probably still have air in your p/s system .the correct way to bleed these is jack up front of truck so wheels are off the ground first with engine off crank steering wheel all the way right hold it for 5 to 10 seconds then turn it all the way left hold again 5 to 10 seconds repeat this several times if p/s fluid is foamy it has air in it .you will puke out some fluid doing this just keep adding then start engine and repeat the same process turning lock to lock and holding .by doing this you should get most of the air out and your pump should be much quieter .Use type F atf fluid

I am almost certain the issue is not in fluid or air in the system. Ford put a junk power steering pump in these trucks. It is even worse when you have larger tires. When my truck had 35's on it it burned up 4 genuine Ford pumps in 30k miles. They were not rebuilds either but rather brand new pumps.

Get a P/S pump made by A-1 Cardone. I had the same question a couple of years back and I have been using this type of pump ever since. I would think they have a pump for your truck, the one I have is a direct fit replacement.

Do what you want to do .I'd recommend bleeding P/s pump as I told you .I worked 20 yrs at a Ford truck Dealership and have been driving ford Trucks for 40 plus yrs and I have never replaced a P/S PUMP on my own Trucks but have done a lot of them when I worked at the Dealership .

If you have done the bleeding process as said and still have a problem with your P/S pump then go get another pump .

And I respect what your saying. On any other vehicle I would recommend exactly as you. However all the replacements my truck has had were installed at the local Ford dealer so I would hope they were properly bled. My current one wines like no other even after giving it fresh fluid and bleeding it.
