If you are using stock AC hoses, I'm guessing they will only work with the compressor mounted correctly. The suction line probably wouldn't care, but the discharge line to the condenser probably wont reach if it's mounted wrong.
If you're having the hoses made, or the stock ones actually reach, it wont matter how you mount it.

All 4 of our vehicles have ac. My wife has had hot flashes since 09. She won't ride
with me without ac. We are in the Milwaukee area. 2012 was a hot year.
Original question: My compressor is vertical. Is that correct? Should I attempt to
remount it horizontal ? (without breaking a seal)

Have you tried "freeze off" or any other cold break free trick?

You do not want to break either one, they are a major PITA with the steering shaft, shock tower and maybe a 1/2 coil spring bucket in the way, if you have it drill out.
Drill bits and easy outs brake too....ask me how I know....
Bad day goes worse there is always a "helicoil". If you can get the busted piece out and get it some what drilled.
I have better luck with a cold versus hot removal.
