Stock Limited Slip vs Truetrac

I think my rear end needs some work. 2009 F350 173k miles on it with 4.30 gears. used to do sweet two track burnouts. Now it only leaves one track and clunks a little when I do slow tight turns.

So I am thinking that it needs a major rebuild?? And if so, should I rebuild with a stock LS or replace with a true trac? I don't go off road except a little for work. I mainly just use for side work and pulling camper.

Thanks for all your help.

Clutches are worn out. Not surprising with so many miles, and those burn-outs didn't do it any good either. People burn out their LS when they get stuck and keep reving or otherwise abuse it. But yours has outlived most I would guess.

Question is, do you really need the LS? Lots of trucks get by without it. If you do need it, I would not recommend going with an OEM rebuild. A Truetrac will be a much better unit, and money better spent.

The factory LS was gone in my Excursion after the years and 275,000 miles when I bought it. I had trouble getting anywhere in over an inch of snow and one tire would spin only.

I had the rear end completely re-built with s tru-trac and 4:10 gears. I never needed 4x4 again all winter. It gave the truck an entire new feel!

yes, luckily it lasted through the winter. No problems at all on the streets and had it pretty deep on a job site and it walked right out with 4x4. My shop is going to order it this week for me.

A locker might be extreme for me. Really just haul a camper and material around. Rarely off road and usually its just jobsite or snow that i drive in. Any reasons for me to get a locker over a truetrac?

i drive normal in my truck and it doesn't make any bangs or clunks turning. If the road has dirt or something on it and i turn the inside tire kinda spins BECAUSE of the dirt on the road other than that i don't know its there unless i go off payment and both tires turn 100% of the time now

Whats the difference between a Detroit Locker and a Truetrac?

Also what is a average price for the install?

I have a tru trac but in my ram 1500. The difference is that the tru trac is a limited slip that utilizes gears instead of clutches. Try youtubing Detroit tru trac. They have a cool simulation of how it works and I am not smart enough to describe it haha. Basically, you don't need limited slip additive anymore, just plain gear oil. Also, it's designed to put the power to the wheel with most traction. I've had mine installed for over 40k miles and have yet to experience any traction issues.

The locker just locks both wheels so they rotate the same speed. The locker would be used more for serious off road.

tru trac uses heli cut gears that lock against themselves to mimic a locker. With both tires on the ground ive been told they work good but if you get the rear crabbed out ive also been told the tire with less weight can sometimes not spin fully. Plus ive heard from EVERYWHERE the tru trac grenades itself just like the GM gov loc does

Detroit Locker uses to square cut geras that have two big springs that keep them locked so you get 100% traction 100% of the time even if one tire is off the ground and in the air, plus it unlocks when you turn so you dont get tire chirp like a full spool would give you
