Its a product of tuners which change injection timing. black smoke is unburnt fuel at low cyl. temps like from a stop light. Some people get a kick out of seeing their rig smoke like a train, others just like the power of the tunes and the smoke comes with that. It wont hurt anything.

actually it is a waste of fuel, causes extremely high exhaust temperatures that can cause damage to your engine, and makes you look stupid.

a properly tuned truck blows no smoke at all.
take two trucks, do the same thing to both except for the tuner.
put a cheap smoke blower in one, and a good chip that is live tuned in the other.
line up side by side at a traffic light and go for it on green. the properly tuned truck is going to disappear while the other truck is going to sit there blowing black smoke

I have yet to see a hot tune (best fuel mileage) that didn't blow smoke under hard acceleration but that doesn't mean there isnt one. You can avoid blowing smoke simply by easing into the go pedal instead of standing on it.

and while some tuner companies claim better fuel mileage, the only thing that will give you better mileage is a light right foot.
a 40 hp economy tune will give you good performance gains and limit full throttle smoke.
when you start getting into the hot tunes is where the smoke on takeoff comes in.
my 02 is in 80 econo tune 99% of the time. i have a low back pressure 4 inch exhaust, and a high flow intake on it.
i will get a very slight haze of smoke on full throttle off a traffic light.
any more than 80 hp tune is saved for the race track.

I think some of the tunes alter economy, just not the way it's advertised usually.

My black maxx tuner on the 08 would produce 22 mph in the HOT mode if I drove it right. The lower setting tunes would only yield about 17-18.

I for sure get better mpg on the highest tune, I can also play with my settings and not have any smoke at all with lbf on 1, on a 5 and stomping it, it will spew smoke everywhere. Having said that, even on a 5 and the highest tune, if I'm not stomping it, it barely smokes.

I'm running h&s tuner and tunes...

I have the Street Race Light+ tune from Matt@Gearhead, and most of the time have no smoke at all, but like others have said, you put the pedal to the floor, it will give a slight haze of smoke. But far from "rolling coal".

Just me, but I'd want to make sure my engine was completely healthy before even touching a tuner. I'm not sure what year/miles you're driving, though.

Good point. 2007 with 155k all highway between Illinois and Florida... Runs good, just hoping to increase the mpg...
