2014 Trailer brake Questions

I just bought a 2014 F-250 XL regular cab 4x4 with the 6.2 gas, 3.73 elock diff, and optional camper package. (sterling metallic grey)

I have had many fords and loved them all and I finally decided to spring for a new one.

I have a few questions about installing a trailer brake controller. My truck did not come with the factory TBC.

#1. Can I put an under dash aftermarket TBC on this truck? ( I know I can buy a factory ford TBC to fit in the dash but they run a strong $200 more than an aftermarket one.)

The truck came with the plug that I would splice a TBC into.

#2. Where is the plug in under the dash to plug a TBC into?

#3. After I install the TBC, do I have to "flash" the truck computer to get everything sycronized or is it a plug and play deal?

Any and all advice would be appreciated. These are probably simple questions but being as this is the first truck I've ever owned with fuel injection and an auto trans I am new to the game.

Thanks

A strong $200 more? I don't know where you get your brake controllers but I just called the dealer about ordering a factory one and it's like $220. I don't think the aftermarket ones are all plug and play with the sway control and such.

You are correct, there will be issues with the advance trac and trailer sway control. I paid 229.00 shipped for my OEM ford brake controller. The wiring is in place and it's just plug and play. You can also find them on eBay for around 200.00.

I had the same problem and negotiated it in when i bought my 14 F250 CC last weekend. It is 300 ish fo the controller/install/programming for it to work with sway control and all. I dont know about you but last controller I installed in my 84 f250 was 70 (cheapest avaliable) plus had to be wired in. IMO the factory controlers are leaps and bounds above the universal ones. I plan to have the truck for a long time so I see it as an investment for the future. My dad bought a dodge earlier in the year and it didnt have a brake controller. He wanted to go with the aftermarket but with a good contoller ($100-$150), wiring adapters (they said it was a plug and play as well), and programming ($80) he was close to a factory unit that is warrentied with his truck.

ok so it sounds like I am better off to spend the money and buy a factory in-dash controller.

I am finding them on the internet for around $250, which isn't that bad.

Now when I get one and install it do I then have to go to the dealer so they can program it in? Or will I be able to use it right away?

Thanks for the input

The factory controller is second to none. Well worth the investment.

Yes, the dealer has to flash it.
Have fun!
