Subwoofer

I'm planning to add a 12 inch sub behind the rear seat of my crew cab. I did a search and not really coming up with what I'm looking for. I dont really want to move my seat up or forward, so that really limits the space I have to work with. I've seen boxes for sale on the web but for that kind of money I build it myself....

My question is 'size'....How big do I make this thing? Does a larger enclosure produce more effecient base? Ported or non ported....Lastly one or two subwoofers???

I'm going to use a Alpine SWS-12D4 driven by a Alpine MRV-500.

Are the two tens alot of bass??? Do you think one 12 would work?? Thats what I'm thinking for mine as well. The enclosure 4-6 inches than the speaker.

The specs sheet for the sub should have it's air volume requirements listed on it. Build your box around that. I prefer a ported box because they hit harder with more rumble. Sealed boxes make a cleaner sound that many appreciate. Two 10's move more air than a single 12..... just sayin

According to Alpines website the SWR-12D4 requires .75-1.00 cubic foot for a sealed enclosure and 1.25-1.50 for ported.

I have a single 8 inch powered bazooka tube on the rear floor between the 2 seats (right behind the center console). I find it more than adequate.

I'm partial to the W series subwoofers by JL Audio.

I have 2 JL 12w6's in a sealed box behind the rear seat. Using 12's in a sealed box gets the best of both worlds, hard hit and deep rumble.

I spent a lot of time shopping for my Klipsch home woofer (made in USA, thank you). I said I wanted a 12", the salesman (more like snot-nosed saleskid) was implying I'd be just as happy with the 10-inch system. I drove 100 miles to get the 12", because the internet showed me this was the nearest one in inventory - that 10" was going to be a hard sell.

As it turned out, they had a sound room. No prob... I have the Balrog scene from Lord of the Rings on Blu-Ray, and they have the equipment to spin it up and let it out any speaker in the room. He threw every watt he had at every 10" sub in the house, and it was impressive. I then asked him to swap the sound to the 12". One roar from the cinematic creature on a 12" sub gave me my first exposure to permagrin - before the Powerstroke. My wife had the same stupid grin on her face that I did, and the decision was made right there. I now have a 12" subwoofer and it's not about air movement... it's a Limbo thing: How low can you go?

Now the next thing... I was watching Cloverfield when it first came out on Blu-Ray, and there is a scene where the monster stomped in front of a convenience store, blowing in all the windows. That's when the photos fell off my walls... and I'm not exaggerating. The 12" will introduce a whole new rhythmic vibration... good luck with all the screws nuts and bolts.

Cookie, you're onto something about the depth. This sub may be too deep to fit back there. Now you guys have got me looking at JL's thin line subs.....whew them boys are pricey!

But why buy one when you can have two for twice the cost!

Back in my install days, I was more than happy with my Kicker and Pioneers. I had a single cab 94 Flareside that had 11 speakers and 4 amps in it (more money then brains back then). That had 2 10" Kicker c10 competition's in it. They were changed to Pioneer's IMPP 10's when the Kicker's didn't kick anymore...

Of course the 12" is going to produce a lower bass sound, however they take up a lot of space. I've made custom enclosures that mount the speaker facing up under the rear bench seat but I don't think you'll be able to do it with a 12".

Like most other things, it comes down to personal preference. Good luck with you decision but let us know what you decide.

Taking a page out my book, eh? One gets it done... after that, it's just watts. Oh... and big freaking wire. My home system has 800 watts for the sub alone, and that's enough to disrupt the house. These guys out there with 2000 watts tear their vehicles up.

Not to mention their eardrums, associated tiny bones, and nerve endings.

I have a 12" Pioneer shallow mount behind the seat in my regular cab truck. I wasn't too sure about a shallow mount sub at first, but its sounds awesome!
