I would agree that for a true high performance converter that Dacco probably isn't the best choice. But I wouldn't say that there is anything wrong or cheap about them. They are just stock rebuilds.

As far as people's opinion, well it's the internet, you're gonna have to deal with it.
All of my daaco converters have been new, non stock, higher performance pieces. I've built and used many of these in customers cars with zero issues.
Use whoever you prefer, but I'll try to never use a tci converter again, and I'll stay away from center force for clutches as well. Not because I heard people had issues on the internet, but because I've wasted a few thousand dollars of my personal and customers money.

 

Thanks for following the thread, I will at least put Dacco on par with the other reman companies from now on. And while I'm not really against them now, the dirty dog converter is pretty affordable and looks like good quality so depending on my conversation with the owner on Monday that's the one I'll get.

 

Finally got a hold of Dirty Dog, from what I understand his stock performance model is simply a damper/direct drive delete so I'm going with the stock replacement converter. He said the performance one is good for 400hp and 5200rpm, definitely above my little ol 302 even with GT40Ps and cam.
I'm officially excited about the build again, just can't wait to fire it up!

 

FINALLY I have confirmation from UPS that the converter will be here by Wednesday. I was getting very frustrated with the time taken to build and ship the converter but then again maybe Alan was frustrated with my emails and phone calls. Ready to get this show on the road.

It took them 2 1/2 months to get it built? What am I missing here...sorry I feel like it shouldn't have taken that long.

 

You're telling me! He only takes orders by mail, so that adds a week to ordering and receiving. It's a tough position to be in, I actually called to say send my core converter and money back less shipping and just buying something on summit but he told me he just sent it out to ship, after two weeks and three calls to get the tracking number I find it is actually on the way.


I believe that the small orders like mine which are under $200 kind of get put to the side as the bigger and more profitable orders are filled. Really excited to get it as he does have a pretty good reputation.

 

Got the converter as promised, however there's a bunch of dirt/debris in the converter! There's some surface rust on the inside of the snout, probably not that big of a deal to clean up that, but I don't really know what to do about the crap inside it. Any ideas?

 

You have to ask yourself how dirt got in there, why its rusty, and what your willing to risk? I've never seen a new converter that didn't come with a plastic cap on the snout. Maybe you got shipped a core by accident???

It had a cap on it, my guess is it's stuff from sitting on a shelf or in transit.

 

That looks pretty clean compared to some I've seen. Maybe stick a rag on a wire in there and try to swab it up.

 

Not a hope in hell I would run that converter. Send it back, get your money back, buy a known quantity. Looks like a core, not a built converter. If it looks that bad where you can see it, I can't imagine what might be inside where you can't see.

I think PATC still makes a lockup AOD converter with 1800 rpm stall speed.
