Sporadic ticking in gear

Hi All!

This place has been a great help in starting to troubleshoot problems, so I thought I'd share this one with you.

77 F250 400

Truck has been running fine, but now I notice when I put it in gear or am driving I sometimes here a fast ticking or clicking - almost like it is reving up just a little bit for a second.

I recorded the sound:

http://automaticrabbit.com/things/truck.m4a

The first bit is it just idling, then you can hear me put it into gear. Shortly after that you can hear this jumpy clicking a few times at 22sec and 24 sec, 27 sec and more.

Any hints on where I should start?

Thanks!

-Todd

My guess is something in the transmission, I've never heard of a torque converter making that sound before.

Might post in the Transmission forum and see if one of the knowledgeable folks stops by and sees it.

I actually had a very similar sound and it was actually a jumping cable (spark) causing a missfire which actually got worse with load, as the transmission does went it engages...

That's a good possibility! I'd take a look at stuff in the dark to see if I can detect any external arcing...

. How many miles? Timing chain may be worn out and stretched till it is hitting something... especially when the engine jumps from the transmission clutches engaging...

Update

Hi All!

I thought I'd provide an update.

First, thanks for the responses! They definitely gave me a good starting point. I had just had the transmission rebuilt, so I did swing by and talk to those guys. He didn't seem to think it was tranny related, so I went down the misfire route.

I decided to put in new plugs, wires and cap - turns out that inside the cap there was a bad connection. Seems like it would sort of work sometimes, but not too well for one cylinder. It was corroded and charred. After that little tune up, things are back to normal!

Thanks again, I really appreciate it!!
