Three things affect mixture on that carb: float level (do you have a glass bowl?), main jet size, and idle mix screw position.
Float level should be about 3/4 of the way up the bowl.
The only way to know what jet it has is to pull it out and see. By now it could have been changed by a previous owner.
The idle mix screw actually affects mixture well up into the driving range. Screw it in slowly at idle until you hear it start to stumble, then out slowly until it just smooths out. You can also adjust it with a vacuum gauge but this will get you 90%.
If the timing is retarded, you'll smudge plugs too.
