Rubber firewall matting

How effective is the rubber matting on the exterior of the cab? I assume this is only on diesel trucks. Mine isn't in very good shape and the fiberglass insulation behind it fell off.

Would I be better served ripping it out and adding more sound deadening inside the cab?

If you mean the stuff with foil on it, that's for heat insulation more than it is for noise.

I took all the jute padding out from under my rubber floors, and removed all the foam from the firewall too (inside the cab) since I had a leak and it was soaked and causing more rust damage. Not all that much louder inside than it was before I removed it... definitely noticeable but not bad, but then again I don't likethe inside of my truck to be dead quiet either.

No I mean the stuff on the outside of the firewall, I've only seen it on diesel trucks. It's a heavy black rubber/plastic backed by yellow fiberglass.

Yeah I saw where you said you only seen it on diesels... probably for both sound and heat since it's both rubber and fiberglass.

If it's falling apart, I'd take it out and drive it, see the difference, and decide what you want from there.

Interesting. It's an XL truck so it's not like it was heavily optioned. The matting is formed perfectly with all the right cutouts like a factory part. I already stripped it off the old cab but I can throw it back on and get a picture.

There was a piece around the driver side too but this should give you an idea. I'm tossing it now for sure though, I left it in the sun hoping to soften it up and it got really brittle.
