New NAPA oil cooler.

Hey guys. I am planning to flush my coolant system in a week. I am going to go with Zerex HD ELC. I am doing the complete restore-restore plus flush. I already have the coolant filter installed(have new filter waiting for the fresh coolant). So I guess I will be planing a Oil Cooler change a few weeks after that. My question IS...would it be safe to run an OEM style after market cooler. I can get a NAPA cooler for about $160-175. Over half of the price of the OEM. Plus has life time warranty. Thanks guys for any advice.

Is it a Dorman??

seriously - aftermarket OEM style oil coolers have not had a good track record. Buy one from AutoNation White Bear lake for $290.

X2 for OEM. Don't chance the gaskets being inadequate material and doing the job twice.

What he ↑↑↑↑↑ said. if you where to read a few threads here on aftermarket coolers. It should be enough to scare you away from even considering such a purchase. Sure lifetime warranty cause you'll be doing it again in a few months!!! Only OEM on that item. Dont waste your money. Or more importantly. You valuable time!!!

Be careful about your coolant flush as well. A lot of the sediment that you break loose during the process ends up trapped in front of the inlet side of the oil cooler. As soon as you install the new oil cooler, back flush it by hooking a 3/4" heater hose to your water hose and running it through the 'out' port. This will push out all the crap sitting there waiting to plug up your new oil cooler. This is a real possibility. It happened to me.
Also, if your truck is '05 or newer, you should really consider purchasing an update kit and tackling all the components that you'll have easy access to while your in there for the cooler. The kits include the oil cooler and all seals, new intake gaskets and o-ring, as well as a new HPOP fitting(the STC fitting is prone to, almost destined for, failure) and updated turbo drain and some other items. It also includes a bulletproof egr cooler, or you can do an egr delete as well.

Thanks bodywerks, I think I will tackle some of items you mentioned. Don't think I can afford the the BPD EGR cooler just yet though. Wish I could. I was figuring that the cooler would get plugged so I thought I would wait a few weeks to change it out. Do you have a Part# for the update kit?

Anthony can verify that it does indeed have the plague. and is very closely
related to Mary Mallon aka Typhoid Mary.

All you need to do is search Dorman and oil cooler or gasket failure.
