Rough idle, P0300 Code & pinhole in charge air cooler

My 08 F250, 6.4L has been idling rough lately and today started to stumble/blow white smoke on acceleration (this seems to have stopped, but the rough idle & P0300 are still present). It's been really humid and rainy here lately and I've been reading a lot about the charge air cooler issues. Pulled the lower CAC hose expecting oil and water, but nothing but a few drops of oil. After inspecting the CAC, I found a pin sized hole in it.

Could this be related to the P0300 or am I looking at two separate issues?

2008 6.4l rough idle & P0305 code

Thanks for moving this to the correct forum

I replaced the Intercooler / CAC and the EGR valve, which I took apart just to inspect and clean but was unable to remove it without destroying it...and not for my lack of being gentle with it.

Here's what up now: no smoke but still have rough idle, especially in gear with foot on brake. Accelerates fine, no stumbling or hesitation. Cleared codes and drove it about 40 miles before code set with P0305, Cylinder #5 misfire.

Coolant level hasn't budged and no other symptoms except the rough idle...which gets rougher if I idle more than a minute or so.

08 F250 Ford diesel 6.4, 150k miles, new fuel/oil filters (OEM)

sounds like injector #5 has an issue and might need to be replaced. That is fairly lengthy process with all the stuff that needs to be moved to get the valve cover off.

There are probably some you tube videos on the replace of those.

Is there a way to test the injectors before tearing into it and replacing?

The dealer can do a test with their IDS computer.

I've been considering upgrading my scanner.

Would the AutoEnginuity Ford bundle have similar capabilities to what the dealer has? Is it capable of diagnosing injector troubles?

I would think the only thing you will be able to do is read and clear codes. It takes ford's computer to actually perform certain tests.

Probably 1 hour diagnosis fee is what they would charge. You can always ask them.

Dealer says I have 3 bad injectors: 5, 6 & 8. I've ordered new injectors and have the passenger valve cover off and #5 injector out (see pic). Two of the little plastic rocker clips are broken (cylinders 1 & 3 exhaust valve rocker). I've been searching for the part number or a source for replacements with no luck yet. Do these actually serve any purpose? I hear of broken lifters being blamed on these clips failing, but for the life of me I cannot see how these little dinky pieces of plastic could have an impact of the rocker operation. Is it more likely that when a rocker arm fails, it takes out the plastic clip with it and then the clip is blamed??

Yes, you need to replace those. I would also replace all of them in this case on that bank.

You will also need to replace the fuel lines there as you have to take the fuel lines off to replace the rockers. The lines are a one time use

Source for plastics 6.4L rocker arm retaining clips

Know of a source to buy them? I've been searching and haven't even been able to find the part #, let alone a place to buy them?

Thanks! Got 'em ordered. I assume the fuel lines from the HPP to the fuel rail are one-time use and will need to be replaced as well, correct?

No, you would not need to replace those if you did not open them up.

Check the bible:
