I wouldn't go quite that far just yet. That just means the dealers have placed orders for them. I wonder just how many of those orders were specifically made for a persons personalized specs. And with all of the anticipation and the fact that the 14 models have been out for how long now. I surprised that the orders for the trucks weren't actually higher. A hit? To me it's more like trying to play catch up. But that MHO.

Yes, far too early to tell what the take rate on that diesel is going to be. However, I do expect it to sell well. The 2014 Ram with the gas engine is a really nice rig, has excellent manners. I expect the diesel engine will be a sweet powertrain too.

Be interesting what the towing crow has to say once they've put some miles on. That picture won't be clear until for month months.

It's a pretty great time to be a truck person. There are some amazing trucks being made.

So I went to the Ram website and spec'd out a 2014 ecodiesel with a 3.92 rear, crew cab 4x4 6'4" box Laramie longhorn (which I assume is close to a Lariat). My max payload is 859lbs and max towing is 8350 and a price starting at 52,305.

An equivalent Lariat with ecoboost gets me a 3.55 rear, 1560lb max payload and 9500 max tow with a starting price of 45,650.

The gas mileage savings doesn't seem worth it, I have a 2011 Lariat ecoboost 4x4 6.5 bed and with a family of 5 plus luggage I make a trip to OC Maryland every year and last year I averaged 19.8 roundtrip from western NY, going through PA there is a lot of hills, I think that is really good. I don't think the ecodiesel would be getting much better than 25 roundtrip making the extra cost not worth it. Remember this is just my opinion.

One thing to keep in mind with those numbers. They only include a 150lb. driver. So if you factory how much you weigh vs. what is included. Generally those numbers will decrease. I know I for one weigh a lot more than a scrawny 150.

A Lariat and a Larimie Longhorn is not a far comparo.

You need to go King Ranch or Platinum to get to similar equipment levels. The price differences between the two trucks is actually fairly small as you can get a 50k F-150 no problem.

The payload ratings of the Ram are terrible.

I've owned many diesels in Japan where diesel is about $.65 a gallon cheaper than gasoline, like the bible says it should be. No way I could drive a diesel in America enough to justify the cost of USA rip off diesel. EPA knuckahaids.

One thing remember this is a eco-diesel, and not a power diesel. The Hemi is the top engine in the Ram's still.

I think for guys like I used to be who drove a stupid amount the cost, and longevity would likely be worth it. Back then I would do 40K plus a year.

For me if I could have a sweet rcsb with decent power, and 30 mpg hwy I would of been very happy back then. My GMC tuned for mpg would only get 22-23 tops. Usually 21 mpg.

Sorry, no matter what, there is no way I could justify an ecodiesel. $8k buy in, then add the cost of the DEF, then the higher cost of oil and other maintenance, and lastly about $3-$5k every 100k miles for an exhaust. I don't think so... not me. Yeah the exhaust can be baked and cleaned more often to increase the longevity but that's another $600 or so to have done. I'll pass. I'll take the 3.5 egobooster!!!!

Diesels might make a bit more sense once the price of gasoline goes up and direct injected gas engines get particulate filters.

Refiners are already saying we're going to see a 6-10 cent increase in gasoline prices at a minimum.

Comparing an F150 ecoboost to an EcoDiesel 1500 Ram as far as economy, its roughly te same cost per-mile. I would take a gas engine over the diesel for the payload. But in all honesty I have no reason for 4 ton pay load capacity at all. Very most maybe 1 or 2 tons. But if one gets better mileage over the other towing the same load, then that is where I make my choice.

Shouldn't this be in the Ford vs the Competition section of the forum anyway? Not really relevant to the 2015 F150...just saying.

In Sweden there already is a class 1 gas that is containing just 10 ppm sulfur but the US companys can´t produce it? In a country that made a human moonlanding....

Strange....

From pickuptruck.com

Reports about the EcoDiesel's popularity with pre-order consumers continue, charting at a rate more than double what's normally seen when a new model debuts.

We've been deprived of 1/2 ton diesels for years. The only ones we had were crappy 6.2Ls or ones people dropped a 4BT into or Isuzu 4BDT series. So that could be why people jumped on these right away.
