There are two temp sensors. The other one is just down to the left of the water pump. One is for the gauge, and one for a light I think. I can't remember which one is which though.

I have the same problem on my sc. I believe the sensor on top of the pump is for the guage at the dash from my memory of trying to fix my problem.. I hear ya about disliking wiring..I'm right there with ya..but if you figure anything out I'd be stoked to know!! Good luck!!

Disconnect the sensor and ground the wire for it. Turn the key to RUN. Either the gauge should peg all the way right, or the ENGINE TEMP light in the diesel-specific panel should light up. Then do the same with the other sensor/wire. That will tell you which one is for the light and which is for the gauge. If one of them pegs the gauge, then the gauge head is good and that sensor is bad. If neither one pegs the gauge, then the gauge head is bad, which is not uncommon. The temp gauge and oil pressure "gauge" are together in one head unit. LMC has them, or you could scavenge one from a junkyard truck.
