F100 front Dana 44 fit rear??

Hi, Another general purpose question. Ripped a 1976-1980 F100 4X4 FRONT end apart for the brake set up and whilst I was at it, took the Dana 44 3.5:1 Crown wheel and pinion, in excellent nick. Have a LSD Dana 44 REAR here as well with a few noises, 3.73:1 so was wondering if the Ford front CW & P will fit into the rear 44? Believe it is NOT the HP version, anyway of telling by the Dana numbers stamped on the rim of the crown wheel? Not having a great deal of luck with Dana numbers for some reason, maybe not asking in the right forum section?? BTW, using it in 2WD vehicle!

Cheers, Dave 64

Dave, this page has a lot of useful info: Mr.N's Dana Articles to Include 44, 60 information.
Specifically this page: Dana 44 Solid Front Axle: Reverse Spiral and Standard Housing info..

The front D44 should be a High Pinion one. All F100 front axles from 1966+ had D44HP's to my knowledge. This means that the pinion and ring gear are cut in the opposite direction and aren't transferable to the rear axle.

Adrian,
Thanks for that. Just my luck, thought it was too good to be right!

No drama, I'll probably advertise it or see if I can do a deal with the differential repair guy and trade it in.

Cheers, Dave

You should be able to sell it easily. A complete D44 HP from the year range you mentioned is a very desirable front axle, particularly for the Jeep crowd.
