advice 04-08 F150

I have two older ford trucks but I am considering a newer one for a daily driver. I like the new ones but the price will probably keep me in the 04-08 range. I am wondering what peoples thoughts are on these 150's in the following areas?
4.6 vs 5.4 for reliability and fuel mileage
4x4 vs 4x2 for reliability and fuel mileage

Now my newest truck is an 86 150 with a 300 six so there have been a lot of changes and I am just unfamiliar with how these newer trucks perform and hold up. Also I will be driving a fair amount so I would like an idea on a resonable fuel estimate. thanks

I have an 04 F-150 5.4 3V and have had zero issues other than normal wear and window regulators. 96k on the clock now. Mileage is about 17 in town and 20 hwy

Been through two of these trucks, one I had until 230k then I flipped it. Ive only had the 5.4 but im programmed and can get 20. Sounds like you could use the 4.6 though. On both truck ive had to replace the hubs on the 4wd but thats been it

From a simplicity and economics point of view it sounds like the 4x2 4.6 Would be your best choice. Though not all trucks have these problems, the 5.4 has cam phaser and spark plug issues, and the 4x4 has more parts that can fail. The 4.6 and the 5.4 get similar mileage with the 5.4 putting out more power, but the 4.6 is more than adequate.

Another advantage of the 4.6, being the 2v motor, is that it is easier to work on. You can usually get a much lower price on a 2wd also.

For me, I wanted the extra power of the 5.4, they get about the same mileage, and there just weren't many 4.6 trucks around my area. I got 4x4 because I hunt/fish and spend time in the woods.

If I where you id be pricing a 09 or 10 with the 4.6 3 valve and the 6 speed auto. If you do alot if driving that is gunna save you way more in fuel than a 04-08
