Popping/Pinging on '02 F150...exhaust/tranny???
I have an '02 F150 4.2L V6 Supercab. When I first start it up, it makes this "popping/clicking" noise on accelerateing and disengaging the clutch sometimes. Is this just the exhaust warming up and expanding, or is it something else that needs a Ford tech to look at? i.e. tranny problems or am I just being paranoid? I have a manual transmission and it also makes this "whirring/buzzing" sound occasionally in 2nd gear the most. I can feel the stick shift vibrating and it goes away when I grab on to it. Does my linkage need adjusted on a truck already with only 11K miles? Is it something more serious?

Hi mfitzyk and welcome to FTE
Does it ever make the popping/clicking noise just sitting there?
There is no adjustable shift linkage on your truck. You still have warranty so you should probably have a tech from your dealer take a drive in it and see what he thinks.

I took it to a dealer and the mechanic said that the popping noise was just the exhaust heating up and the pipes expanding. This makes sense because when I shut it off, I can hear the exhaust make a couple of loud pings and pops as it cools down. I guess it just sounded different on the road with the engine running vs. sitting there turned off. I still don't know what the intermittent "whirring" sound is coming from the stick shift. Of course it didn't make that noise when the mechaninc was is the car with me. Maybe things are just expanding down there too??? Didn't start making that noise until this summer when it got warmer.
