Exclamation 1997 F350 Manual converted to Automatic conversion back to manual

I purchased a 1997 f350 diesel 4x4. It came with a clutch pedal but an automatic transmission. Today i believe my trans went out. It shifts extremely hard from 1-2,2-3 but doesn't go into 4th gear. It shifts at 3000 rpm. I also don't get power and my speedometer is not working. Im thinking of purchasing a 1995 f350 diesel 4x4 manual 5 speed trans and putting that in. Would it bolt straight on in or do i need a conversion kit? if so should i get a 1999+ 6 speed instead?

It should physically bolt in. You'll have to verify the clutch system is still in place and you'll need to swap your automatic flexplate for a manual flywheel.

Anything else depends on how much was modified.

check the vss on the rear axle. It's a two wire sensor near the top of the differential that will cause the truck to do exactly what you describe. I'd prefer a manual transmission; but i don"t believe that the transmission is at fault in this case.

Is your odometer working? Check fuses 8 and 18. Common problem.

Yeah, if the computer doesn't get a speed signal from the PSOM it puts the trans in "limp mode", with the symptoms you describe. Is your OD OFF light flashing?

Well I was looking all over the engine and trans and saw that there was a 2 prong wire that was disconnected from the trans. I replaced it but I can not test if this was the solution. My auto trans shifter arm thats on the column, just moves around but does not engage the trans. I want to buy a manual trans and replace the auto with that and out in clutch, clutch plate, flywheel, hydraulic clutch slave cylinder kit, and shifter arm. What else am I missing?

I have the clutch pedal. Im buying the clutch plate kit that comes with everything for $380 at Oreillys . The driveshafts should be the same length but will check into it. Why would I need to change the master cylinder, starter?

The starters are different I believe between autos and standard transmissions.

but as sgg93 said i think your trans is ok even if you are gonna swap anyway the speedo problem will still be there and if the trans is still good prob can sell for it for 5-600
