Many people here have. Its probably the most popular choice for moving the tank to the back here on the forum. There is a full write up on it here somewhere.

Hey Mr 56,
Look for a post by jniolin. He outlines a Mustang tank installation.
We installed the 22 gallon '70 Mustang tank. It's nice to get the additional range over the stock 16 gallon tank.

Good luck over there in California - stay dry.

I used John's article on installing mustang tank in my 48. The article made for a very easy installation. Thanks John.

Just to add to the install info., I added the vent to the filler neck rather than welding to the tank, works great and I didn't have to worry about another hole in the tank.

I also added the vent tube to the suburban filler neck that I modified and will use a remotely mounted rollover valve.

The only adjustments we made to the Mustang tank installation:

o Charcoal canister - My wife complained that the garage smelled bad. This was wife code for "You better make that truck smell better or else!". We added a charcoal canister to the vent tube & went with a closed gas cap - much better.

o Gas Tank Sending Unit - You need to think through how your sending unit is going to talk to your Gas Gauge. We had modern gauges that required a 0 ohms - 200 ohms signal from the tank. The '70 Mustang tank sending unit sends an 11 ohm - 77ohm signal. So... We liked the '70 mustang sending unit for the fuel pick up & we clipped off the in tank part & welded on a modern universal one that was 0hms - 200ohms.

Don't assume you can fix the Gas Gauge signal issue easily later .... Ask me how I know...

Good luck over there.

Anyone mount the 22 gallon tank in between the frame rails? My truck is gonna be low, and every inch or two counts....

I did the 17 gallon between the frame rails because like yours, mine is gonna be pretty low as well. I wanted the tank to be at least even with, if not higher than the rear axle center section. With the setup i came up with, im a little above the center section. The extra height of the 22 gallon tank with my setup would male the top pretty close to the top of the frame rail, which would interfere with the bed cross member. You could probably take out the bottom spacer and be fine with clearence.
