460 DOVE head porting was it done right take a look
Help!!!
While rebulding my 460 I asked the shop to do port and polish, gasket matching etc. I got the heads back and the exhaust ports do not look very smooth and the hump is not completly removed.
I thought the hump could be completly removed flush to the bottom of the exhaust port? I thought all that was supposed to be left was the cone of the valve guide that supports the valve stem.
I took a picture in from one of the porting web sites and the head shop said that with that severe a porting the valve guide would crack/not last/crack-with trying to install seats and that would be only for a racing set up? In that picture just a trace of the original smog bump was there angling off to both sides very sharply and there was no ridge at the top of the valve guide next to the valve stem. I thought there did not need to be any trace of the hump left just the "floor" of the exhaust port coming to an even cone around and up to the top of the valve guide.
I still have a raised portion left from the hump athough much smaller and smoothed off. See my gallery to view a picture of my exhaust ports.
Anyone know where I can see a properly done porting of a 460?
Also I thought no sharp edges-- every thing polished mirror or near mirror smooth on the exhaust side?
Help help help!!! Thanks guys
Greg

Seems fishy to me. Contrary to much advice, your intake ports should be left unpolished because this helps keep the fuel suspended in the air flow. BUT, your exhaust ports should be smooth, and the smog bumps flush. You might want to ask them why this isn't the case with your particular heads...maybe any additional material removed in that spot would have left the walls too thin.....? A stretch I know but worth asking.
