Edelbrock 1406 Tuning Help

I have an Edelbrock 1406 carb on my 390 - not my choice btw - and I had the truck running. I ran out of gas and now I can't get the thing to run for me. I checked the fuel filter and the fuel filter seems to be clean. If I get it to start, someone has to have their foot on the pedal, and it is SUPER rich. But if I try to cut any fuel out of the idle screws it studders and dies. So what am I missing? Any help?

Sounds like you sucked some crap from the fuel tank, dirt ,rust, water ect. when you ran it dry. Time to take it apart to clean and may as well put a new carb. kit in it while you have it apart. That's the bad thing about running low or out on an old fuel tank , get in to crap that's in the tank. I keep mine at a 1/4 or more. While you are at it put a inline filter between the tank and fuel pump and one between the pump and carb. You could remove the tank and clean or replace it if you keep having problems with dirty fuel.__Jim__

I did have a inline fuel filter between the pump and the carb. I checked that and it seems clean. The tank is new-er as the outside is still painted gray and the paint has held up well. I should mention I put a new fuel pump on not too long ago.

I would also like to mention that my gas gauge doesn't work and someone had stole gas out of my tank. While I thought it was good, turned out not to be so. So locking gas cap is on the way.
