99 f250 superduty 5.4 surging

hi everyone my truck at idle sounds like it has aftermarket cams and the exhaust coming out of the tail pipe smells really rich. when driving down the road my heater controls default to defrost. Also when I fill up with gas it takes forever to get it to fill all the way. im lost on where to begin with the problem [ I did check the tank vent hose and their is no blockage] Possible vacuum issue? all input will greatly be appreciated! Thanks guys!

Is there black smoke?

That points to a vacuum leak.

Might be an unrelated fuel tank vent or evap charcol filter issue.

Start with the vacuum leak, find it and fix it, then evaluate again what the truck is doing.

Most likely place for a vacuum leak on these trucks is the hose going to the PCV valve, there is a elbow on the back side of the manifold that cracks and causes the leak,,

My heating unit at times will change to defrost settings, especially when put on "auto" this is because my actually climate control module is going bad. Theres people out there that will rebuild them for half the price of buying a new one from Ford. Anyway, perhaps you do not have a vacuum leak but your EATC is going bad. Heres a helpful link,

The heating changing to defrost is an indication of a vacuum leak, not a bad EATC.

Maybe it it is. The o-rings in the vacuum solenoids go bad and leak. Readily replaceable by a handy person.

In any event, it IS a vacuum leak.

Good morning guys! After our recent snow storm my engine bay got packed with snow and shorted some coil packs I learned not to drive through 5foot drifts lol. Got that fixed and I also found that one of the two vacuum lines that go to the egr controller was rotted completely off! I'm still working on it I will let you guys know further more when I get done.
