I have a 96 Econoline with the 4.9L I6. It has the 3.08 axle ratio. I have trouble towing up some steep hills. Would I gain much be switching it to a 3.55 rear end? Is it something a fairly handy person could do themselves?

 

Yes and no in that order. It will help immensely but it's not a simple job. If you haven't done a rear end before, best to take it to a pro or get help from someone who has done a few.

 

SR's right on both counts. The late model p/u's and econolines don't have a conveniently removable pumpkin like the old 9", so you're looking at a fairly major project. Best to take it to a shop that specializes in this sort of work.
