6.0l Crank Seal tool

Wife is starting to complain about the oil puddle in the driveway so it is finally time to re-seal the front of the engine.

Anyone in the central Texas area have a 6.0l (diesel) crank seal tool (303-671) they would be willing to loan/rent for a few days? I am in Cedar Park and am willing to travel Waco to San Marcos to pick up. I just am having an issue with paying $180 for a (hopefully) one-time use tool. I can rent from FreedomRacing.com for $90 but that still seems a bit steep. Figured it would be worth checking on here.

Also open to any advice - tips - tricks on doing a front engine seal job on a late 04 model 6.0l.

Thanks in advance!

Where's it leaking oil from and how'd you pick the front cover to replace? I only ask because there's not a lot (any?) oil flowing through the front cover of a 6.0, it's all coolant except for the one seal on the LPOP. Have you looked at the LPO regulator or bedplate?

I just bought the truck a few months ago and it had a very slow leak/occasional drip that the PO said had been there for years even after getting the bedplate resealed by the dealer so he quit chasing it as it never lost enough to worry about. Well, of course it has now progressed into a pretty significant drip. It appears right behind and above the oil pressure regulator along the left side of the cover/block. It only leaks when engine is running so it is difficult to get up in there to really see where it is coming out of without getting my head ripped off by the fan belt.

My thinking is that I'd rather get in there once and do all the seals in that area instead of doing one at a time chasing the drip and I have read that the crank seal is a pretty common area to leak. I looked through the service records and the crank seal hasn't been done as far as I can tell so I figured to get in there and replace that and the oil pump cover seal along with the pressure regulator o-rings. The kit comes with a new engine front cover plate gasket too and hopefully all of that will get the job done for the next 200K.

Any chance you have that seal install tool? EDIT... I just realized I misread your location as Austin - Justin would be a bit too far to drive for it.

Fair enough, sounds like you have it planned out and aren't just throwing parts at it.

There's a guy named 'snowseeker" in the 6.0L forum that made his own seal tool, you could hit him up and see how he made it. If you read his 6.0 thread this guy has some serious skills. If you can't PM him, maybe just start a thread in the 6.0 forum asking how to make one. We have a homemade head lifting bracket template (OTC 303-759) but none of the seal tools.
