Question Q for those that bought a F350 SRW in CA in the last couple of years

Recently you guys helped me help a friend decide to buy a Superduty 6.7 over the competition. Well her new truck came in Friday and I went with her to pick it up at the dealer. This is a fairly Kalifornia specific question (I think), but the dealer had her sign a form picking which weight class she would be using her truck in. This is an additional fee on top of the Unladen weight fee pretty much all CA trucks have to pay. I questioned her having to do this as I'd never myself seen the form or heard any of my friends that have bought new trucks in CA talk about it.

The dealer insisted that any buyer of a 1 ton truck (or more) had to fill out this form. Her truck is a KR CC LB 4x4 F350 SRW with the camper package. The weight fee form was called CVRA and I looked it up when I got home: It's actually a law that went into effect in 2001 called the Commercial Vehicle Registration Act of 2001. To cut to the chase: my research showed the dealer shouldn't be forcing all SRW F350s into this, because they fall under the exclusion of being under 8k in unladen weight and less than 11.5K in GVW rating EXCEPT (and you are gonna' love this) if the truck carries a temporarily attached camper (her truck was ordered with the camper package). So in the case of that exception the pick-up truck is considered a Commercial Vehicle and NOW has to pay a fee of not only the cargo (a camper) but also anything towed behind. The lowest fee is the A class which is 10001 lbs to 15000 lbs and that's another $3 hundred something every year, the next class (B), which the dealer encouraged her to pick was another four hundred and something dollars, on top of all other fees, per year!

I'm wondering if the CA DMV is making the dealers now enforce something that's been around for some time, or is it just this Ford dealer in particular?

Does this not suck big-time?! Has anyone else that bought a new (actually it also applies to used) F350 SRW in recent years in CA had this happen to them?????

I think it's time to move....

That is steep. In WA, my plates are $80/yr for a 350 with 11.5k package.

Yes, that happened to me as well. In my case, since I don't have the camper and trailer yet, I signed a waiver so I don't have any extra fees. Theoretically I could tow and/or put a camper on it without the extra fees now but heaven help me if I get caught. Some of the CHP vehicles (I think it's mostly the pickups but I'm not sure) now carry portable scales and I'm not one to take chances. So until I actually get the camper and/or trailer I didn't see a need to pay the extra fees. I'll upgrade my weight class with the DMV when I do get the toys later.

Thanks for the replies. The other kicker is you are supposed to also run a sticker on each side of the truck indicating the weight class and also each has year sticker (like on the license plate) that goes next to the weight sticker.

So you pay close to $70k for a two tone beautiful King Ranch truck, and you have to slap these butt-ugly stickers on it?!

Do they want everyone to leave the state?! No I take that back, they want everyone that doesn't drive a Prius to leave...

My pickup truck exceeds 10,000 pounds GVWR. Am I required to obtain an MCP permit even though I use my
truck solely for personal use?

No. Persons operating pickup trucks (11,500 pounds GVWR or less) or two-axle daily rental trucks (26,000 pounds
GVWR or less) in noncommercial use, are not subject to the MCPA. The California definition for pickup truck is found in
Section 471 VC:

A “pickup truck” is a motortruck with a manufacturer’s GVWR of less than 11,500 pounds, an unladen weight of less than
8,001 pounds, and which is equipped with an open box-type bed not exceeding 9 feet in length. “Pickup truck” does not
include a motor vehicle otherwise meeting the above definition, that is equipped with a bed-mounted storage
compartment unit commonly called a “utility body.”
This is odd, because the question clearly states "pickup truck exceeds 10k# GVRW" but the answer says "No" but then mentions the 11.5k# GVRW.

Yes it is conflicting and then below that (in the DMV definitions site) is the Exceptions to being just a pickup truck and that's where it states the "with a temporarily mounted camper" (since now the truck is considered commercial and the camper is the Load).

I'll go read your other link now -- thanks for chiming in...

Kalirado is almost as ridiculous for plates, first set on my '11 were $1278.00 and they've now dropped down to ~$600. They're still around $350 for my '03 Dodge Ram and that's not including the annual diesel inspection which runs ~$65.

Well crap, Fish, I had the equal but opposite experience with my SRW Dmax... sending me back to a 6.0

Do they still just rate them at 9900 lbs? Maybe that's just for California...
