Starting Issues with my Expedition

Starting Issues with my Expedition
I have a 97 Expedition and when I got it, it had a been sitting but it started...it was very loud and sounded like it was going to die but it didn't and sounded like the CAT was bad....called O'reilly's and they said that it was probably the coil packs or a vac leak...long story short....found out that 1 spark plug is broken and haven't moved forward from there until we get it out....what are some other possibilities because 1 spark plug shouldn't prevent it from starting...pls help...thx in advance.
I should add that when I do start it...it sounds like its out of gas {it has gas}...and there's a grinding or metal to metal sound that follows right before it dies....my husband crawled under to see if he could pinpoint it but there's nothing

I know your trying hard to describe what you have but from the size of it the truck has been neglected.
Whoever is going to try and solve issues needs to go after one item at a time and progress from there.
What motor is it?
Put a whole set of plugs and boots in to be sure they are all good.
Look for a cylinder plug hole that might have the threads blown out causing the noise.
If that is the case a special repair has to be done to that head.
Next is there a check engine light on?
If yes what are the codes as read by a Scanner?
The grinding can be anything from a starter to a pulley bearing that was run until it got that bad.
Basically the truck has to be worked over to solve all the issues then repair as needed on an on going basis.
At this moment you really don't know the extent of the situation you have.
Lastly, do not, do not, put parts on trying to 'get lucky' without good test proof they need to be replaced. You only end up with a big bill for little gain.
Come back as the work is done and help is needed.
Good luck.
