Cummins swap

hey guys I am thinking (key word) on swapping my L300 I 6 in my 66 F600 for a cummins 5.9 turbo diesel. Any input, has it been done, what am I looking at?

Your looking at lots of time money and fabrication. You need to do a lot of things for these conversions. I'm in the middle of one in my 71 crew cab. Haven't exactly looked into doing this swap in the slick's but I've seen people saying about having to modify the firewall for it to fit and have enough clearances all around. I haven't confirmed this just something I read here on the forum but you need custom motor mounts probably new cross members made. Intercooler mounting can get tricky fitting everything behind the grille especially if running AC. Figure out what kind of drivetrain you want in it. Most likely need to upgrade your rear axle as it won't hold up to the cummins torque very long with any beating. It's doable but by all means not easy or cheap.

Havn't seen in a Slick (yet) but the owner of True Blue magazine; son has a 7.3 in a early gen Bronco; his issue was 4x4 front drive shaft. Not as in your case. I recommend front coils be changed to 3/4 ton if possible for wgt.

Wasn't awake yet earlier didn't take notice to the f600 part. You should be fine with the suspension and axle that's in the truck. Just need a transmission of your choice that will mate up and custom driveshaft if it's 2wd? I wonder how the large front grille area would be to stuff a Intercooler, condensor and radiator behind compared to the smaller front end f series trucks.

You could always run a 4BT. I know the 6BT will fit in a Slick pickup.

6BT's are generally cheaper. A lot of windrowers had 4BT's.

By the looks of the transfer case and drive lines, it is on a highboy frame. It very well could be a factory '64 F250 4X4 with a Cummins and dually axles.
