A fuel tank question

I know that Chevy had a filter sock at the end of the gas tank suction tube on the 70's van, so I'm assuming that it was in all their gas tanks. Did Ford ever have one?

a fuel tank question

I recently dropped the gas tank on my '78 F-100 and replaced the sending unit. It was the original unit and had a sock (although it had fallen apart) on the pick-up tube. The new sending unit I ordered from LMC also had a sock on the end of the tube.

As said above, the original sending unit had a sock, as do replacements.

It is a round flat ended rigid (?) plastic or metal (?) material filter and is bonded with some kind of stuff (?) to the end of the PU tube.

Thanks for the replies. What came off mine looked nothing like the pic. I do see that the sending units for sale have the strainer, but is the strainer available by itself? Sure hate to spend $$$ just to get the strainer.

Got mine from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard. They're cheaper than Summit.

Dennis Carpenter also has the filter sock.
Also, they're still available from Ford but the price is a real gagger! They came in a package of two and it's something on the order of $50.00+ for them.
Here's a NOS sending unit.

Why mess with it? I'd use an inline filter and be done with it. You can monitor a clear inline filter and change when need be, and since the fuel pump is on the engine (not in the tank like the newer models) nothing will be affected.

When we pulled the one out of the chevy, the sock was ripped and there was a ton of sand and pebbles in there. That has always stuck in my mind, even though I still use an inline filter too. I ordered the Spectra unit. I taking the strainer off to put on my converted unit for the 38 gal tank, so..........anyone want a new stock sending unit for shipping only? First to say yes gets it.
