C8000 dump truck in California
Hi All
I have a great 1988 C8000 dump truck with 3208 and 10 speed which is in very nice condition it's age. I like the truck, and bought it about 2 years ago for occasional use and sort of a hobby/collectors item. Will put some pictures up later.
The dilemma is, with the new emission rules. Seems that the Gov. has decided to try and scrap all our old trucks. Not sure if a DPF will even work on the engine.
Anyone know of a later model large displacement V8 diesel engine that will fit in there? The International MaxxForce7 may possibly be an option, but surely an expensive one, and also short on displacement CI's.
Any thoughts on how to keep it legal here, or should I look to find a new home for it out of state with someone who appreciates the fine craftsmanship in the old Ford COE truck.
Thoughts/comments will be appreciated.

As always, this is best answered by going directly to the state website and DMV office.
Scroll down almost half way on this page:
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/cdl_htm/sec1.htm
As I read it, your vehicle is required to be repowered to a 2010 or newer engine by Jan 2015.
However, that site contains another link:
Background Material: (Blank) Documents and Fact Sheets - On-Road Trucks (In-Use) Control Measure
And within that is your answer, perhaps: The "Low Use Vehicle Exemption" 5000 miles per year:
http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/onrdies.../faqLowuse.pdf
There were other low use exemptions like ag, but it appears you missed the 1/31/14 deadline if I am reading these correctly.
Lots of stuff to read through, but last I checked, that's easier than a repower.
If you can't get the exemption, I'd sell it rather than repower, but that's up to you.
Good luck with it.

Thanks for the replies.
I spoke to a rep. from CARB this afternoon who stated that pre-1994 trucks over 26000 GVW may operate without restrictions until Jan 2015.
After that, a 2010+ engine will be required, or the truck may be permitted for less than 5000 miles annually to continue operating without any modifications. He also said to expect very strict auditing if the limited mileage option is chosen.
The link to DMV publication referred to by 85e150six4motd earlier confirms no need to stress about the truck emissions for now, so will enjoy using it.
The truck is surprisingly intact with few evidence of molestation from the past. The pullout ashtray is missing from the center of the dashboard. Does anyone have an ashtray to sell from their surplus parts collection?
