79 F250 ID
I'm trying to identify motor/carb/emissions and so on for my 79 F250 2wd RCLB. VIN is F25JRFE9143. It's a 460/c6. Chilton's says it was made in San Jose. The carb is a D9TE AEA, and I'm assuming this is a California emissions motor, but I'd like to verify.
My immediate concern is a fuel leak from the carb and I don't know enough about what I'm looking at under the hood to tell what level of emissions control it has. It certainly has a profusion of vacuum lines, and some of them have been plugged off by PO. I guess I'm looking at a rebuild kit for a Holley 4180--C or EG?
Truck also has full race track trim, is 2-tone black on white (probably not original paint), and has F250 Ranger badges on the fenders. The little badge block under that is there, but the emblems on each side are gone. I'm pretty sure it's an XLT just based on the fact that it has silver/black interior with the cloth and vinyl seats, black and silver door panels (with the pockets on the bottom), the fakey wood decals all over, and a solid-colored vinyl-coated headliner.
It also has factory air and a sliding rear window which I don't know is original. It has limited slip or an interlocking rearend (not sure which, but it makes pretty rooster tails in the mud). It's set up for a camper with dual batteries/switch, an aux tranny cooler, and those little through-the-box tiedown studs on the back quarter of the box. I'd like to order the build sheet for it, especially since I don't see any info about the engine on the valve cover. Is there another location to look for whether the block/ VIN go together?
I seem to recall reading here on FTE that you can't get a build sheet from Ford anymore, but I haven't yet found where they do come from. If anyone has the info for that, I'd really appreciate it.
Unfortunately, the more I work on it, the more work it needs. I've had the truck since '98, and it is the family farm truck. We do less work like that, and the pickup sits so much that spends more time springing leaks now than going down the road. I've bandied back and forth about keeping it or not. If I'm gonna keep it, and it looks that way despite the whining coming from my checkbook already, it needs some work.
I've never tried to post pics here, but if you want to see it, I will try to get some as soon as I get it fired up and out of the shop...

Unfortunately, I can only answer two of your questions. First, to post pics, upload the pictures to Photobucket. Then copy and paste the IMG tag into your post here and the pics will appear.
Second, there is no such thing as a 'numbers matching' Ford, except for Mustangs. In the Ford pick up, the closest you can get is verifying that the engine SIZE is correct by checking the VIN.

Thanks, VocaTexas. I'll try and post pics here. I know from the "j" in the vin that the 460 is correct. I'll post a pic or two of the engine/carb. Obviously there have been some deletions in the vacuum mess--I mean system. It has no air pump, and the vacuum line from the motor on the back of the manifold (EGR?) is gone. There's also a pair of electric valves on the vapor system that no longer connect to anything, as well as the wires to the electric choke being missing. It runs great, though it idles pretty fast. I can't find the matching "tuning code" from my Chilton's manual on the under-hood sticker though.
I found a reference to Marti Auto somewhere, but can't remember where it is. Is this the place that has the old Ford records now?
You can see the leak at the front right of carb--accelerator pump I think.
The interior was nice, once.

J = 460 4V
R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant.
FE9143 = 1979.
Was the truck sold new in CA or elsewhere? DSO code stamped on the Warranty Plate, located on the left door face below the latch.
71 = Los Angeles (SoCal), 72 = San Jose (NorCal), 73 = Salt Lake City (ID-M/T-UT-WY), 74 = Seattle (ID-OR-MT-WA), 75 = Phoenix (AZ-NM-NV).
Carb ID tag number: D9TE-AEA = Ford part number: D9TZ-9510-AE .. Holley 4V Carburetor (Motorcraft CA-2060).
D9TZ-9A586-Z .. 4V Holley Carburetor Kit (Motorcraft CT-1274) / Obsolete ~ Available NOS and from auto parts stores.
Carburetor applications with or without CA emissions: 1979 F150/250 460 / 1979 E250 460.
1979 460: With or without CA emission only makes a difference for E350 & F350.
By 1979, 50 state F150/250 460's all came with PCV, EGR valve, cat converters and Evaporative Emission System.

At one time FoMoCo provided free build sheets for the asking, but is now charging a fee, but...
FoMoCo has had none of the 1967/79 records since the late 1980's.
In the late 1980's, FoMoCo was planning to THROW AWAY all these records. Kevin Marti, a Mustang/Shelby 'nut' in Phoenix AZ found out...and got ALL OF IT!
So, beginning in the late 1980's, FoMoCo had to get the info from Marti. Eliminate the middle-man, buy direct: martiauto.com

Best pic I could get of the warranty plate. So it was originally sold in LA evidently. The trans code says K and it's got a C6. I think the color code is W but it's hard to tell even in person. The body code is KA4 and axle code is C7J--don't know what those mean.
Thanks NumberDummy. We're fortunate to have you here.

On a two tone truck the color code should be two digits, primary color first, secondary color next.
It's possible that the truck was originally a single color and sometime in it's past has been two toned, possibly by the original selling dealer. It wasn't that uncommon for things like that to happen.
From the pictures I'd say the code is "M" not "W". M is the code for white, W wasn't used in '79.
If the secondary color is black, the color code should read "MA" if it came from the factory like that.

Thanks again for all the info. I was skeptical that it came two-toned, because the white paint looks fine under all the scratches in the black, which shows evidence of overspray on the back of the fuel doors. Did the full body trim come with the Lariat package? It seems like that design just calls for a two-tone paint scheme.

A high-school buddy of mine occasionally "borrowed" his dad's 79 f250 which was red w/ white. Probably the memories of those adventures had something to do with my purchase of this one.
Also I'm thinking the 3.54 gear ratio might combine with the massive EZ lift hitch, camper tie-downs and overload springs to explain why we found half the transmission in the bottom of the pan one day about a year after I bought it...
