Ball Joints, wheel bearing and CV axle

OK Engine very happy, e-brakes replaced and rear rotors - DONE. Now I have to do the front end. Already removed wheels, calipers and axle nuts, How can I remove the hub without special tools? I rented a ball joint press, should I rent a wheel hub press of some kind?

This should give you a good idea what's involved in the bearing replacement:

He used a slide hammer to pull off the bearing assembly but you could probably get away with just using a hammer to tap the bearing assembly to get it off if it's stuck. I didn't need to beat on it too hard, but it looks like the 2002 and up have aluminum knuckles whereas my 98 is iron/steel.

The standard ball joint receiver tubes may not work on yours. I couldn't find a rental kit that had the correct receiver tubes. There's very little clearance around the ball joint flange and the outer edge of the control arm. I had to use the Harbor Freight master adapter set: 14 Piece Master Ball Joint Adapter Set

The receiver tube in the upper right in the case is what I used, but I loaded it up too much and it buckled on the first one before it was removed completely. For the opposite side, I had to use the one in the upper left.

To avoid the buckling, load the ball joint up some and then tap/beat the control arm perpendicular to the ball joint axis and it should move a little. Load it up some more and tap again. Repeat until the ball joint is out.

Thanks for the info. Wheel bearing gave me a fit. Had to put bolts back in a little and whack the crap out of the blots to push out the assembly. All repairs made and it passed!
