99 Explorer transmission doesnt engage

I have 5r55e transmission that doesn't engage.
Fluid level over full. ?????
24, 000 since rebuild.
Fluid looks and smells brand new.
Its like its trying but doesn't conect.
Son was driving on the freeway and it acted like it slipped out of gear.
No ugly noises.
4.0 L. 4wd.

still under warranty? Sounds like a mechanical failure with the rebuild to me.

Nope. Out of warranty.
No codes. So he's thinking transfer case issue.

First things first, get the fluid level correct. Assuming fluid level was correct after it was rebuilt, I wouldn't expect it to be over full now.

Will it go into any gear at all? 1, 2, reverse?

mikeman hit the nail on the head.

try it with O/D Off (it makes a difference) and then try it in Manual 1, and Manual 2

then report back.

Check the fluid level with the engine off then with the engine running, the fluid level should be lower with the engine running. If the level is the same with the engine off and running the pump is not working, no pump pressure = no go.

This may be why the fluid level appears the be overfilled.

Still sitting at the shop that rebuilt it.

Looks like he's real busy. He's the go to guy in our area of southwest Portland. Even though we're just out of the mileage on the warranty, he's already said he'll stand behind the work.
We're two years over the time frame.

The fluid looks brand new. So I too see it being a seal of some kind.

Believe it or not..we had ours rebuilt at Aamco. local guy does a great job. That was better than 2 years ago and close to about 80K miles I think.

That's so simple and obvious, now that you pointed it out. Easier than doing a line pressure test. I learn something every day from this site.

Overdrive is tore up.

He called them skxxxx gears. Tore up.
With no towing. Best he can guess. Shifting direction without being completely stopped.

Thoughts?

Do you come to a complete stop before shifting?

Check this out:

At about 5:30, he points out that a worn sprag and planet can cause a no movement condition. I have no idea if this is related to your issue or not, but it's interesting. Note that he tore the transmission apart for a different issue.

That's what he thinks caused it.

My sons been driving it at college for four years since the rebuild.
We talked last night. He thinks he stops before he shifts.
But now that I'm thinking about it. They have a funky driveway that needs a multiple T turn to get out off.
