E250 engine swap...

Well...After being laid off after my injury, I have run across a heating/cooling/plumbing/hvac company with 18 company/fleet vehicles and all the workers private vehicles. Their prior mechanic was too slow...so I found the guys ad on CL. Everything is going quite well. He mostly runs Ford work vans. He has two chevy's, even though he hates them. Lol. They were a good price.

I just replace the left control arm assembly on one of his vans due to a worker sliding into a curb on ice. Made real nice work of it too. All the E250's he has are the 5.4 Triton motors. He has a 2000 which blew its motor. His prior mechanic found him a rear end wrecked copy of the van with a good motor. I have to do a motor swap essentially. Part of my pay on it is keeping the leftover junk. Minus things I am gonna cannibalize into his storage unit as spare parts. But I get to keep the broken motor, trans, brainbox, and wiring harness. I have future plans for them.

The point here....is I have not seen really any writeups with good pics/vids on an engine removal/installation. I already know I can remove the front end like on a VW and make it a "service position" essentially. I have already looked over it and intend on removing some stuff from the suspension areas so I can utilize my engine hoist AND trans jack to help slide the motor out. I am going to document and record as much as I can on this swap and toss it into this thread. I am planning on starting this on Tuesday. Shouldn't take more than a couple days. I get to work in cold weather, BUT I do get a solid parking lot of asphalt to be able to do this in. And plenty of room.

There was a rather extensive thread about swapping bodies with a V10 some time ago---it was well done and would be helpful to anyone thinking of doing the same.

You're right about a post documenting the R&R process of an engine. Most of us know how its done but so far its discussed more than shown in photo etc.

If you spend that time I know it would be a valuable contribution here.

PS Here's a link to the body swap thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...on-a-99-a.html

Agreed. I must check this thread out. Thanks for the link. I will be taking extensive photos for sure and posting every day of my gain on it. That is if I can get my engine hoist back from my friend tomorrow. Lol.

I don't know if it is possibly on the e-series, but I pulled a 350 out of 95 GMC van. Came out the front. Will be putting it into my Dad's 88 G10 next month. Pretty much everything on the front comes off including the radiator support. It unbolts. On the 350 I removed the throttle body to get clearance to get the engine high enough to come out with the engine hoist.

I like that video! And yes, they pretty much come out the front. VW on a majority of their cars you can place them in a "service position" that requires removing the bumper, lights, and grill basically. You have to do this to replace the water pump and what not. Essentially the same concept Ford applied to a lot of their vans.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513956884/Remove the air tubing going to the intake.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513612023/Remove the grill and the two pieces surrounding the headlights. A couple bolts on top and pull the bottom out.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513486055/Remove the black shroud piece from here.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513485215/Remove the side marker lights. Just a couple screws. I chose to just unclip the socket and leave the bulb inside the side marker to lower risk of breaking the bulb.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513608933/Remove the grill and headlight framing. The head lights come out with it.

Remove the bumper via the four bolts behind it on the frame.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513604733/If this happened to yours like mine, you can undo the surrounding smaller bolts to release the bumper cover from the frame piece.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513607923/Once the bumper is off, I find it easiest then to drain the fluid out of the radiator. Take a piece of hose and stick on the drainplug nipple on the drivers side. Undo the nut all the way and then stick it back in 1 turn. Jack the vehicle up on the passenger side and undo the reservoir lid. Let it drain.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513607043/I used this piece of hose off the coolant reservoir, fit like a glove on the nipple.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513946314/Remove hood latch to get it out of the way. No need to release the cable.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513947174/Unattach the shroud and just set it back out of the way.

Remove radiator and condenser, no pic, sorry.

Remove the wiring harness for the lights and the airbag module. It just unclips from the passenger side headlight hole.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513616533/Remove this cooler too. Just let it hang off to the side.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513489525/Remove the upper support.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55284637@N08/12513613663/Remove the lower support with the two center supports still attached to it.

Remember to PROPERLY depressurize the A/C system before starting all this. Remove the battery first thing as well.
Might as well drain the oil too and depressurize the fuel system.

That is good information. I am sure that I will need to remove at least some of that with my van in the future.

It goes back in/on a lot easier than it comes off. I pulled everything off the front end and motor to swap my plugs for the first time. Made the job so much easier.

Ya, the motor really looks like its gonna be a pain in the butt to slide out. I am gonna do a bunch of removing of stuff so I KNOW I have plenty of clearance. I would rather spend two extra hours making more room, than 6 extra trying to maneuver everything.

I'm of that same school---if it even looks like it'll impede me it comes out, lays on the ground until I remember where it went!

And this is why I also take pics of everything. Helps me remember where it went. Another helpful thing is sticking the bolts back in where they came from.
