57 312 Y Block rear main seal

My friend had the seal replaced in his 57 T-Bird 312

He says the instructions say to install the seal offset'

His mechanic installed it 1/2 up and 1/2 down.

It is now leaking more than before, does this sound logical?

The original seal was "rope"and the new one is "rubber made by "Best Gaskets"

This is in a 56 F100. I'm not getting an answer on the Y block forum so I thought I would try you guys.

the rubber seal does need to be installed "offset".he could have nicked it when installing,may even have to original rope put back in it.

Yes it does need to be offset and the little side seals need to be installed carefully and be a little proud so they seal against the pan. That is the way I installed mine a couple years ago, doesn't leak after 6000 miles.

Great info both of you, I'll print out the diagram and give it to him. His mech said he would do again for free, and though he's done hundreds of them he has never done a Y block before.

It may not be the seal around the crank that's leaking, it might be the two side pieces with the headless nails that seal the main cap to the block.

6336 = Seal-Crankshaft Rear Main Bearing Cap.

6701 = Packing-Crankshaft Rear (rear main seal).

Tks for all the replies, I'm getting too much info for me to pass on accurately, so I have convinced my friend Mike to log in to this site and register! I hope he follows through.
