Why v10 instead of big v8?

Any opinions as to why Ford would make a 415 ci motor in a v10 instead of a v8? Is there some sort of scientific advantage?

Same CID displacement with smaller cylinders gives better flame travel and more power with lower emissions.

The real reason is tooling. The same tooling produced the 5.4L and the 6.8L, saving a ton of money on tooling.

Basically the same engine with two more cylinders, they share the same pistons, rods, bearings and probably other things like pulleys etc.., gm did that with the 4.3 v6 it was a 350 with two cylinders cut off

Yes, tooling, as in the transfer line that produces the engine. Adding a second, different transfer line to produce a larger V8 would have cost in the neighborhood of $1 billion.

I understand the V-10 is now in the medium duty F650/F750 trucks as an option. I've preferred gas motors in my large trucks. Is the V-10 stout enough?

well if ford decides to make a new v10 based on the 6.2 it will be roughly 470 cubes, imagine a 470 cube v10 modular with direct injection, just adding 2 cyls will add 60+ hp and tq, I could easilly see 500 hp/tq on a N/A 7.8 v10 boss. Add 5 star tuning and we will have a winner.

I would sell everything I own for that truck! But chances are they wont be able to get decent fuel mileage, thus shooting down the idea

Honestly the V10 is allllll marketing.

You see, Ford could have made a 415 big block V8 but they realized something...
Girls wont even consider getting in your truck if you have a 4cyl under the hood...
when you have a 6cyl? they hardly give a second glance...
When you have an 8cyl, they notice and appreciate the effort but thats about all...

Fords PR folks took note of this, AND THUS, THE V10 WAS BORN attracting all kinds of chicks, that's the real difference between the V10 and V8.
And that my friend, is all I have to say about that.
