Question Early Trition 5.4 2v to 3V Swap Worth it?

Hey guys, when did Ford make the 5.4 in VANS 3v? In '04, like the trucks?

Currently brainstorming a for a future 5.4 replacement for my '99 E250...

Vans have never received the 3V motors---all the way through the EOL which is supposed to be 2014 at the very latest.

IMHO your best best would be installing a reman'd 5.4 built to your year and model. Ford has them with a nationwide warranty for about $2,700 exchange.

The problems associated with swapping in a different engine involves changing the PCM and most every wiring harness running from it to the engine. Different years have their own wiring harnesses that do not interchange just because its the same type motor.

Most likely the F-Series 3V motors have vastly different wiring too so you'd be facing that as a big issue too.

K.I.S.S----aka "Keep It Simple Son"!

Plus the 3vs have the cam phaser issue. More problems not enough gain I'm glad my 2005 didn't get a 3v.

Yep---reading the V8 Modular Motor forums says this is very, very true!

I'm certainly no rookie to engine swaps but you guys are right, it just ain't worth it then.

I can get reman 5.4's for $1600, locally.

Did they up the HP ratings any from 99, to say 04? KISS!!

HP etc is pretty much determined by the PCM. If you'd like more maybe contact Mike @ 5 Star tunings---he's pretty much the genius tuner for the Ford modular motors.

That's the KISS method for mo' powr!

Nah, you've already talked me out of it ... I was just curious if there was any small gains to be had, easily. Example, in the early modular Mustang world, you can swap upper intake, heads and cam, and get a healthy gain with just bolt on junkyard parts from newer stuff, ya know. Apparently vans, no so much hehehe

I'm not looking to custom tune my van or anything like that. I just wish it didn't sound like a diesel in the cold mornings, LOL.

The 4.6 and 5.4 did get the new "PI" aka power improved heads circa 1999-2000. I know the Romeo 4.6 was a bit later to the game. Based on Wiki, the 5.4 PI started in 1999, so you probably have the higher power version already. Power went up from ~230 to ~260 hp with the new heads.

Good luck,
George

That's spot on, the only thing a bit unknown so far is if the build date could pinpoint which vehicle actually has those heads in place.

As a public service here's a photo of the PI head identifying cast-in mark:

It's typically located on the right side of the head if looking at the exhaust ports. Since left and right sides are the same its either at the front or the rear of each head depending if its driver or passenger side.
