Morris that is a good article but I don't see a diesel coming out for the F150 with the release of the 2.7 Ecoboost simply because those that want good mileage are going to get that engine, and those that want to tow will get the 3.5 Ecoboost. With the 2.7 EB and the trucks being about 700 pounds lighter, I could see people getting 25+ mpg easy. Also why would Ford produce a 3 liter V6 when they already have a 3.2 I5 diesel that's already coming in the Transit van?

 

There's a lot of speculation on what is up and coming. Now with Ram having a small diesel in a 1/2 ton I suspect the other manufacturers will entertain the idea once its proven that its a worthwhile seller or not. In my opinion, I see the 2.7L ecoboost putting out more power than Ram's diesel, and likely getting close to if not equal fuel mileage. That kind of eliminates the need for a diesel once you factor in the added cost of the diesel upgrade.

 

Ya, that would be a tough one to get into the market I would think.
Fueled up yesterday @ $1.379/L. No savings with the price difference with gas being $1.109.
My Brother-in-law frequents the Phillipines. (pipefitter workin in SK). He was telling me a couple 3 years ago the F150's there have 4cyl diesels.......

 

More hp but fair bit less torque. 2.7L is 370 ftlbs, the dodge is 420 ftlbs.

My impression is that the 2.7L will be very popular with people who don't use their trucks as trucks.

I think we should look not too far into truck history... Trucks used to be powered by large displacement v8's that didn't put out near the power these new small displacement forced air motors. I don't think its fair to say that people buying 2.7L trucks won't be using them as trucks. I think there's far more higher trim level trucks (where the larger motors are usually found) that aren't being used as trucks when it comes to working. By working, I don't mean an equipment salesman driving from farmyard to farmyard, I'm talking bed full of materials, parts, etc... I worked a 1996 F150 4.9L 6cyl very, very hard. That motor put out roughly 170hp/260lbft... I'd have spit nickles to have the power that 2.7L has...

 

The old 300 six was a frickin work horse eh!!!

I just feel the 2.7 will be a great Expedition engine. Something that families will want for the bit better fuel economy, and still could pull the boat to the lake. If I'm looking to pull a big camper, stock trailer, etc. with my half ton, I'm going to go with the bigger v6.

What I mean is the 2.7 will be very popular in grocery getter Lariats and Platinum.

And I'm not one to talk about not using my truck as a truck. It's got a hard tonneau and carpeted bed liner!!! In my defense, I bought it used and it had both on it already.

 

Yes it was Trevor. One of the engines they should have kept and refined. That truck is still going strong, nearly 10 years since I parted with it and it had over 300k on it then. I've been tempted to offer to buy it back a few times but the rust has gotten it pretty good.

I'd be tempted to buy the F150/2.7 Ecoboost if they put it in an ext cab 4x4 configuration. I would really like to have a 4x4 vehicle that I could leave for my wife to use if the grid roads were too poor for the car. I can't see the point of paying equal money for a 4x4/AWD SUV or Xover as a truck when a truck is so much more versatile.

My truck doesn't get worked to its full capabilities very often either any more

 

If their going to put the diesel back in anything new, it should be the Bronco!!

Too bad it'll never happen, but maybe the Super Chief will ?!?!?

I would be in the market if they built a new Bronco. Quite like the concepts they've produced of what it could be.

 

I'd definately invest in one!! Been a Bronc-O-Holic all my life!!
I gotta say, the diesel in one of these babies would be the ultimate dream!!
