Day drive to get lunch
How far / how many miles would be good to drive to lunch?
We drove about 40 miles one way to the top of pine mountain at last years drive
I m trying to find a good place to eat and a nice drive to get there.
I found a Dinners Drive in and Dives place(Smokey Valley Truck Stop)in Olive Hill ky but it is like 65-70 miles one way. Not a bad drive but ... Is that to far away?
I m thinking it would take two hours each way. If we left the lodge at 10 I think we could be back by 3 . Find a cool place on the state park grounds for a photo op . Maybe stop at a local grocery store for food for a cook out Saturday night?
I was thinking we could head into Portsmouth for pizza on Friday night?

Chris, you have to translate 65-70 in to "Old truck" miles. Two things to consider; that would be over an hour and half each way in an old truck with a top speed of 50 mph, also 65-70 miles is a pretty good distance with a lot of distance to have mechanical troubles.
I like driving my trucks but I see about an 1-1/2 hour drive both ways. I've driven my old trucks for longer periods of time but for some it may be too long of a drive. I know after becoming accustomed to the luxuries of our modern drivers, driving our old trucks do become a little more of a job to drive. I know, , but I'm being honest. I'm just saying being tire at the end of the day will take away from the time we have to enjoy the company of our friends.
You and I, and others, are planning to drive our old trucks a great distance to get to the meet but each way we're on our own. If we do encounter a problem on the way there and back we will have to deal with it ourselves. If a break down occurs during a group tour it's going to affect everyone involved. If we did this drive for a group cruise we'd have a minimum of 5 hours involved by the time drive there, eat and drive back making stops along the way. If a break down would happen that could easily drag out to 8 hours. Also, unlike a meet planned at an individual's home, like the last three meets, there is no home base to bring a disabled vehicle back to either to repair or to store the disabled vehicle until that the owner could come back and pick it up. I'd hate to have my truck sitting on the side of the road 50 miles from the lodge.
I'm posting the above to think about. This should be an event we can comfortably enjoy, I don't think we should add any more stress to it than what is necessary.

Chris,
I have adjusted my above thoughts a little since I posted them. Dave kind of hit on it a little.
I'm thinking you could break down in a newer vehicle also. And that break down could stretch into a 15 hours wait. Maybe we could do a long trip, just search out for a good hamburger stand with a large enough parking lot to wait in Is there an "Ohio Best Burger Stand" in that area of Ohio?
