f250 1996 460 OBD1 or OBD2?

Looking to order reader for 1996 F250 w/460. The readers seem to go OBD1 for 1995 and earlier. The OBD2 starts at 1997 and later?
the truck has a 5 speed trans.
Any help would be great.

My '97 F350 is (was) OBD1. Not a California truck.

It depends if your truck is Federal or California emissions. Federal emission over 8500 GVW are almost always OBD-I. If your truck has California emission it will be OBD-II.

There are a few exceptions for Federal emissions, some states adopted Cali. emissions.

For the most part HD trucks(over 8500lb GVWR) never did get the OBD2 system right through until 1998 when the new Superduty truck was introduced, exceptions are diesel trucks and anything built to California spec. Unless you can find the OBD2 connector seen in the pic below under the dash somwhere your truck is OBD1 and the code reader you want is the Equus 3145.
