I have been trying to educate myself on paint aging techniques. I am repairing my daily driver after an accident and would like to try this for my repaint. Conceptually I will build up from black primer with a little red oxide to simulate rust, and use two different colors to form intermediate and top coats......then sand to age the paint. There must be a variety of techniques to create effects that simulate aging.......I would like to hear what you have tried.

If you go to PowerblockTV website, Kevin Tetz did a "Trucks" episode last year on project ClasSix where he did an imitation fauxtina paint job on a fender and door.

 

Use cardboard to sand the paint. It'll flatten it more and could go through the top layer to expose the bottom layer of paint.

 

I was just looking into this myself today,googled how to patina paint a car. Lots of different methods popped up,good luck. L8R ZFLASH

 

I was going to do this on my truck but changed my mind. BUT I had already done my cab in the "patina" look. It was really easy, I bought a gallon of brown single stage and green single stage. I sprayed a couple heavy coats of the brown and a couple of thinner coats of green on top, just enough to cover the brown. After it dried I just went to town sanding the normal places that are weathered on these trucks. Turned out awesome...but then I changed my mind on the patina so had it sandblasted. The paint that I bought was a gloss single stage but when I sanded it a little all over the cab it faded it/flatened it great.

 

Maybe someone will remember we went over all of this about 4-6 months ago. A pretty long thread.
