Timing gear question

Ok, When I purchased a use crank for my 239 flatty, it came with the timing gear on it. The problem I am having, is that the gear had teeth that went in the opposite direction from the old gear. I didn't notice until I tried to drop it in, that the angle of the gears were opposite, and wouldn't work. I figured I could just pull the old gear off the old crank, and press it on to the new one, but I wanted to make sure that I could. Has anyone had experience with this? Was this crank made to turn the opposite direction? Has anyone heard of a 8BA turning a different direction?

It's from an earlier engine, like a 59ab. Used in cars through '48 and trucks through '47. Does it have the distributor drive gear? They all turn in the same direction, unless a rare marine conversion when counter-rotating engines were used in pairs....

It is the correct crankshaft. It is an exact match, and the part number is the same. The only difference is the gear.

Two different V8 crankshaft gears were used in 1948/49 Trucks.

48-6306-A .. Crankshaft Gear-22 left hand helical teeth-Use with camshaft gear having right hand helical teeth.

1935/47 Trucks / 1935/48 Passenger Cars / 1948/49 Trucks.

So using the old gear on the new crank shouldn't cause problems, right?

That would be correct.
