I have been reading another thread about towing gears and think I may have made a mistake. Are the 3.31 gears definitely no tow gears? I have a 1997 2wd expy 4.6 with the 3.31 gears and have a small pop-up and a 18 ft fiberglass boat. I bought the truck to tow with and now am thinking I should have done a little more research on rear end gearing first. Don't plan on towing anything big, should I re-think my tow vehicle? I still have time to get another tow vehicle if needed before spring hits. Thanks for your input in advance.
you could tow a pop up or small boat just fine with that set up. A higher gear will get you off the line quicker. I would be sure your new tow vehicle has a trans cooler and clean fluid though.
Why do you think it wouldnt tow?
I had a 1999 expy 2wd 4.6 and pulled a very heavy pop up with it. Not sure which gears it had but it pulled it great, pop ups have no wind resistance like travel trailers.
I was reading a thread about factory towing gears and the 3.73 LS gears are the factory tow package gears. I know the 3.31 will tow what I have, just wanted to make sure the 3.31 will not break and leave me stranded down a dirt road in the middle of nowhere or pulling the boat out of the lake. Everything I have is pretty light but just wanted to make sure the stock rear end is ok for towing. Thanks

That's great! Exactly what I wanted to hear. For a miniute I thought I was going to have to start my tow vehicle search all over again. I keep telling myself I should have kept my '99 expy EB with the 5.4 4x4 but the gas milage was killing my pocket book.
