I am pleased with how the turbo drain tube came out.

It feels good to get up in the morning and walk out to this:

Whoa - Is that a coffee can?

Power is way up. Smoke is non existent. Spool up is amazing. EGT's never go over 1000. Boost will hit about 15 lbs. after the big turbo and 50 lbs. overall.

I got it running Thursday night at almost midnight and have put over 200 miles on it. I can't get enough of it.

Thanks.

One turbo wouldn't cut it. I needed more power. Now I need more injection pump.

It will leave a 7.3 with a Banks turbo in the dust; a new 5.3 Chevy can't quite keep up. This thing is fun. It only weighs a touch over 6,000 lbs. and I should be pushing 300 HP.

Sweet! 300 ponys sounds wicked

I've been having a huge time trying to find a 4x4 nv5600 or even NV4500 for my swap. Missed out on a good 4x4 4500 for 500 bucks

Just fell on this thread.

Just curious, why didn't you run a dodge he351ve turbo? the variable one?
Lots of guys run those on mechanical engines, use a wastegate actuator to run the vanes.
Then you have your high boost low end, and not kill the turbo on the high end.

Have you thought about a low stall TQ converter? Grabs harder at low RPM's, and lessens some of the input TQ to the transmission.

Also forgot to say, wicked idea!
Everyone is so bent on the 6bt, why use 4 when 6 is better? right?
They also say the 4bt is only good for 300 hp, but I don't see why, if the 6bt is good for quite a fair bit.

Maybe an aftermarket harmonic balancer is something to look into. Fuidamper.

Cool swap for sure, a 4bt makes more sense for a lot of people need, but unfortunately they go the 6bt route because it is more common.

For what I use the truck for, I probably should have went with a 6BT.

4BT's will pump out much more than 300 HP, just not with the 12mm VE pump.

I used liquid engine mounts. When it is 70* outside, there is less vibration than there was with the 7.3. As it get colder out though, it does shake worse.

I have done a lot of fiddling with my turbos and fuel pump. This thing has an unbelievable mount of power. I raced a 3rd gen Dodge Cummins (only to 80 mph) - and won.

Ha! And did you tell him that he got beat by a 4-banger to rub it in even further!

This thread is awesome. Made for excellent Saturday evening reading here sitting on the couch. Well done, man. Well done.

For starters, the HE351VE is too big.

As for high boost low end, I've got almost 20 lbs. at 1,500 RPM and about 65 lbs at 3,000. You're never going to do that with a single turbo of any sort.

Just sitting in neutral with no load I can build 10 Lbs. of boost at 2,000 RPM

Current status

I know this is an old tread but have been thinking about doing this to my 72 F250 4x4. The truck is a beast with a 428 FE and 4 speed but would like to get better MPG without losing the power. I would like to get 20+ on the Highway and nothing would please me more than being able to say that to people that ask me if it gets 10 MPG. My question is are you still happy with it and what was your final setup? IE: Work done to the engine, which turbos did you go with, gear ratio in your axles, etc...

I'm running 3.54's with overdrive. Headstuds, Fire-ringed head (I wouldn't do that again for a daily driver), 5X12 injectors, and stock non-intercooled Dodge type pistons. HX30W over an H1C with a 18.5 cm exhaust housing and 60mm compressor upgrade. I am happy with it. When I drive nice, I can get about 22 MPG. Drive like my normal self, and I get about 17.

I have no Idea how people get the mileage they claim out of their vehicles. I have owned a couple 6BT powered vehicles and never really got better than 18. I was hoping for an easy 25 out of this 4BT like everyone reports, but I haven't even cracked 25.

Would I trade it for the built 410 FE (428 crank in a 360/390 block) that I have in my '66? Never. The 4BT has more power, but I still like my FE.

I had a 92 Dodge 2wd 5 speed shortbed 6bt and got 24 MPG's no matter how I drove it. The Dodge died of cancer this summer so I put the engine in a 96 F250 supercab shortbed 4x4 with a zf5 and getting 20 MPG's. The Ford is alot heavier so that's why my MPG's dropped.

I like the Ford much better then the Dodge, I have a 97 Dodge that has cancer real bad and i'm planning another Ford swap with it maybe next summer.
