New Reality Show Backroads Gold
#20
You mean you guys don't get all the free engines, trans, steering setups that the reality shows get. They send me free stuff all the time - so much I can't find time to get all the work done. Guess they will send some teams to get all the work completed in a week or two.
Sure I do (not). That is why my truck still looks like it did last fall. But in defense of some of the shows, they do give you a few good ideas on refurbishing and restoring every once in a while and are more interesting to watch than many other totally useless things on TV.

The GTO segment was ridiculous. Sure, Judges are desirable, but not all that rare, and certainly not in the large 6 figure value range for a complete resto project.
I did appreciate Corky's daughter's disclaimer when they sold the Scout, that they had 15K into it by the time it was done rather than the 2K Corky said it would cost to fix it. I knew that was unrealistic and can see as bad as that truck was 15K would be necessary.

Fortunately I don't get the travel channel on my cable, I wasted enough time this week watching 3/4 of the "(less than) super" bowl. The Count (Counting Cars) just restored and upgraded a 67 GTO (the last REAL GTO) and got 55K for it. You can evaluate and/or ask anything, but until someone pulls out their checkbook it's all meaningless tire smoke being packed into the tailpipe!

I was getting mad at myself for missing it... but now that I've read the rest, I'm glad I missed it... I've done a lot of selling of old things... Mother was into antiques as long as I can remember... We've sold at most of the AZ antique shows and in some of the antique marts... But ebay and the internet has destroyed that.
What bothers me is some of these guys are saying the get a full paint for under 2k... and that's a color change...I understand that they may be getting a price break for repeat business, but let everyone know that... Another show they bought a set of new used tires and wheels for $300 that they claim should have run $1400... Where do I get mine? What should we believe... When they say they pay below market value for a car, they say the par 6k to 10k to fix-up, and do this all in one week... and then find a buyer that pays them top dollar for the flip...

We all know it is scripted, it seems they all start off real but then have to be set up in order to keep things going.
I for one am glad they are on TV, at least I have something to watch once in awhile. Would you rather be watching all the "housewives of wherever" shows? Most TV is garbage IMO so I am glad to be able to at least relate to something. Its entertainment.
FWIW I since I am in Austin TX for work this week I ran up to Gas Monkey Garage in Dallas last weekend, Richard and Aaron dont work weekends but I did run into Tom who was hanging out in the front entrance area. Regular guy and it was fun to meet him and talk a bit. Even though I didnt hang out too long it was obvious he is just like us and not an "actor"

I didn't see the show, and it sounds like that's a good thing, but the preview video at the start of this thread left me with two thoughts:
1. The '53 Deluxe Cab is nice, but white paint, white tires, and white grille are too much white.
2. With his commentary, and the music in the background, I was disappointed the General Lee didn't come jumping across some pile of dirt or bridge or something. It was a lost opportunity that would have made the video much more entertaining. (come on, someone else had to think this too)
