No, because the dodge transmissions suck and one of the main points of putting a cummins in a ford is to get away from using junk.

Excursion conversion

Kurt, i am looking to do this conversion in my 2002 Excursion in March. Motor is a 5.9 12 valve, VE pump, 60+ valve springs, marine cam, Red Oaks Diesel Injectors, HY35 turbo. I would like to talk to you sometime about some of the odd issues you came across during your conversion. I am also using the 5R110 Trans and letting DCS do the tuning. Are you having to use the tow/haul mode? What throttle position sensor did you use?

Get the updated one from the 24 valve and the 5th gear problem is pretty much solved. Guy I worked with had one from the factory in his I think 99 2500 Ram and he said he has never had an issue even with an attitude tune from Edge.

Well, I just thought I would stop back in here and give an update since I just rolled 20k on the swap. Been all trouble free except a non used Dodge oil pressure sensor failing and dumping a couple quarts of oil before I noticed it. Didn't do any damage, because I caught it in time, just covered the front axle in oil.

I rarely plugged the truck in this winter. The truck started fine down to 20 degress f without even using the grid heater. I started it a few times down in the singe digits without plugging it in, just cycled the grid heater for 10s first. About the only thing I noticed that didnt like the cold is the Dodge power steering pump. It still worked ok, but it gets noisey when temps were below 25 deg.

I've had a lot of people stop and ask me about the truck since I've got Cummins decals where the Powerstroke ones were at. I've even had a couple guys ask me to do swaps for them after they saw how clean my engine bay is. I am working on getting a new place with a bigger shop and might consider doing 1 or two a year for some extra side money. I've had offers for up to 20k to buy my truck as well. Overall I'm happy with the swap and I'll probably keep the truck until it rusts out, it still looks good and it's payed for, so no reason to let it go.

Using the Dodge transmissions is the cheapest option. The only main thing you need then to build/buy would be the engine mounts and probably change drive-line lengths.

Also enough guys have turned up Cummin's in their Dodges that pretty much all of the Dodge transmissions even auto's can be sent out and rebuilt to handle the power/torque and be reliable for a similar price as the adapters to use the 5r110 trans. Most of the manuals really are fine other than maybe a better clutch or that 5th gear nut that was mentioned.

It runs and you did the work, that is all that matters. John Deere used to, not sure if they do now, replace all vehicle engines with Deere.

I could have sworn Deutz-Fahr did the same with Chevy trucks a long time ago. Some teens on YouTube in shop class took a Dodge and put in a John Deere 4045T

Glad your swap went well. Diesel Conversion Specialists just updated their site not that long ago and do stuff for 4BT cummins with the 4r100 and a few other transmission/diesel combos.

Hey Kert don't know if you still monitor this post but I have a question... I just put a 5.9 in my 09 f450 along way from done but cabs back on and its hooked to a 5r110.. My question is if you use all the ford sensors and modify to a ford crank sensor which I have the ring for why do we even need a trans tuner? The truck will not know what kind of motor is in it if all the sensors are ford lol... Also there is a solonoid that turns on the p pump so the engine can run the black wire had a eyelet and the red wire I connected 12 volts to after 3 minutes of running it smoked that solonoid... How did you wire yours to be in the run position?

The trans will work without tuning, I drove mine about 20 miles home from my buddies shop to my house and to work for a day or two before I got the tune files for the trans. The thing is that the Cummins has a much different power band than a v8 International diesel. Even with higher rpm gov springs in the pump, you will want to lower the shift points at a minimum in the trans.

My engine is a VE pump, not a P, so I can't help with the pump wiring.

awesome swap. Mine is close to being done, but I'm just out of time & funds. I used an NV4500 as I was going to tow a lot and thought it would be better, but now looking back, I would have been done & driving LONG ago if it weren't for all the hassles of switching to a manual and tracking down parts.

Hey Kert, I've read this post front to back twice now taking notes an such, getting ready to drop a first gen 12v in my 06' since I've gone through a few sets of injectors, and 4 sets of head gaskets, (yes I did all the bulletproof stuff) and I'm just done tossing money into that pos 6oh. So on page 5 you said at the end you'd post a spread sheet with all the costs included. Do you still have that and could you post it up if so? I'm planning to get the adapter an flex plate from Diesel Conversion Specialist and also the motor mounts and then I'll have them help with tuning the 5r110 later on. Do you have any more info on how you did the harness work or would it be wise to send it in? Idc that much about AC so I won't be getting the $4500 kit, just the $1800 one with the basics. Which turbo did you use I don't remember now? With the location on the first gen exhaust manifold for the turbo, do you think an hx35 would fit there or should I use a newer manifold an flip up on top an relocate AC lines? Feel free to reply here or PM me, any help is appreciated, this thread is what inspired me to do this swap also. Already bought the 12v so I'm just gathering up any little stuff for now.

Awesome, just awesome.

Just curious, why not go with a 5.9 common rail from the 03-07 Ram? Too much money for the motor plus all the complexity of making the electronic injection work?

Kert,

Did you ever get your cruise control set up?

Thanks
