No, my sister had an '05 escape, her husband was able to just unbolt it and it swings down I think. SHe was all worried about it as well, but there are articles online about how to do it without removing axle and exhaust

This was 2010. Ther was physically no way to remove it without taking parts off. No room. Couldn't even access the bolts.
