1996 F150 Clutch Replacement/Trans ?

Hey guys. I have a few questions about my 1996 F150. It has the 300 4.9 I6, 59,000 miles. The slave cylinder is leaking so I need to replace it. I was going to replace the clutch, pressure plate, slave cylinder, and throw-out bearing. Here are my questions:

1. Is there anything else I should replace while I'm at it?
2. I don't know if my truck has a 10" or 11". How can I find out, will an 11" work if I have a 10", and what advantages does an 11" have?(I know that was more than one question)
3. My Axle code is 12, is that for 3.73?
4. What transmission do I have? 4-speed with overdrive (5 gears total). Transmission tag says: F2TA, KA, C361185. Door tag says M.

Any help is appreciated. Also, any other ideas would be nice too.

Thanks,
Chris.

if the 96 is like my 88' the throwout bearing is on the slave cylinder itself. as for the clutch size.... well you will not know untill you take it out and measure it. codes mean nothing(Believe me) you probably have a 10' clutch(most i've seen do) if you have a 10' clutch then a 11' clutch will not fit becausse the flywheel is drilled for a 10' pressure plate.

while you are in there you may want to pull the flywheel off and replace the rear main seal $3.00 part. but that is entirely up to you. I had 150,000 miles on mine and never leaked a drop, but just to be safe I replaced it the same time I did my clutch(just because I was already there).

well hope this helps

oh yea I forgot about you gear question.
the rear axle gears are pretty-much irrelivent for purposes of a clutch replacement. but to find outlook on the back of the differential housing and there should be a metal tag on one of the bolts. just read the numbers on it 3.5 5 x x = 355's 3. 7 3 x x =373's and so forth

Actually, you can install an 11" clutch and pressure plate in your truck AND I RECOMMEND IT! The flywheel comes pre-drilled for both 10" and 11" clutches. All you have to do is but the bigger bolt kit, they are available around here at Knecht's Auto parts stores. You will get the advantage of a clutch that can handle more torque, etc. While there, replace the clutch disc 11", pressure plate 11", throwout/slave cylinder(ford part), pilot bearing, if needed rear main seal, and ALWAYS resurface your flywheel!!!!
You most likely have what is called an M5OD manusl transmission. while you have the trans out I would HIGHLY suggest replacing the three shift rail plugs that are on the back of the top cover and usually leak. Once you get the trans out look on the top of it for the top plate and you will see them. just remove the cover and out with the old and a little vasoline and in with the new, unless you decide to go with metal plugs the will last longer.

just the facts jack,

Jim

Thanks for the help guys. How do I resurface the flywheel? Do I need to take that in or can I do that myself? Thanks.

I know the rear end isn't specifically related to replacing the clutch. I was just wondering what Ratio I had and what transmission I had.

Thanks Again,
Chris.

Flywheel surfacing: take it to a machine shop; it takes a large surfacing grinder.

11" clutch--directly interchangeable, and recommended. The outer bolt circle is the one to use. I retapped that circle and counterbored those bolt holes before I took mine in. BEWARE: that outer bolt circle uses 3/8" CLUTCH COVER bolts, not 5/15" like the inner circle, so make sure you pick up the correct bolts.

My flywheel experience is with a 4.9L; I don't know if the dual bolt circle thing holds true on the V-8s.

I went an additional step and took both the Centerforce clutch and flywheel to a balancing shop and had 'em balanced as a unit. DON'T buy a Centerforce Dual-Friction, a C-1 or C-2 will do fine.

Housekeeping: Rear main seal, pilot bearing, hydraulic T/O bearing. Don't let Centerforce make you buy their T/O bearing--there is nothing special about it other than the CF-logo box.

HUH!! that is weird two people who say that it is interchangeable!! On my 88 4.9 I only have one set of holes and they are on a 10 pattern. I thought about upgrading to an 11 inch clutch but I would have had to buy a new flywheel.

I am not saying that flywheels do not have have more than one bolt pattern because I have seen many that do, Just saying that it is weird that mine doesn't and yalls does;-)

Post 1996 F150 Clutch Replacement/Trans ?

I have a 94' F-150 4x4, I-6 with the Mazda 5-speed. I just purchased a 11" Hayes performance clutch kit. It came with a long style, 3 fingered pressure plate and a throwout bearing with a fork application (the fork part will come off). This is the kit that Jegs had listed and they said that it would fit. I thought that the clutches were diaphram style with concentric throwout bearings. Will this kit work? Any help, Please. Jason
