why do straight sticks have taller gears

i was wondering and pondering the other day and i have a question, why do manual trasmissions have way steeper first and second gears than an automatic, automatics have like 2.5:1 1st gear and manuals usually have 5.5:1 or steeper first gear, why is this? thanks guys

Automatic transmissions have a torque converter that manual transmissions don't. Without the torque-multiplying effects of the fluid flow through the torque converter, the manual transmission has to multiply torque with gear ratios.

The torque converter will multiply torque up to 1.9 to 1 like gear ratio. So with the usual 2.49 1st gear and the 1.9 torque converter, that gives you a close 4.4:1 1st gear!

Well actually the Mazda manual transmissions found in 1/2 tons only have a 3.30 to 3.90 first gear...
