Great song...you're right...Lightfoot was a great story teller. I looked it up...it was almost 40 years ago that the Edmund Fitzgerald went down.

Dang...
(In reference to Kris K and "Good Morning John")

I saw Kris Kristopherson do a USO show way back in the eighties while I was in a holding pattern at the recieving station at naval station Subic bay in the Phillipines.

His 'Travelling Band' did a song about the drummers girlfriend that was titled "FOUR HUNDRED POUNDS of HUNGRY" that blew me away -

IMO there is no greater musical story teller than Kris!

November, 1975. I was just getting home and walking up the walk, when my wife came out and said a lake boat had gone down. Which one? She didn't know!!!! Dam woman, I need to know now!!! I had a few friends on those boats. Turns out, it wasn't one my friends were on, but the Arthur Anderson, one of the boats involved in the search, was one I had buddy on. The Anderson was also the last boat that had communicated with the Fitz.
That wreck, one of many BTW, hit me like none of the others had, partly because everytime I've heard Gordon sing that, I can still picture the Fitz, I saw him many times.
I've been around the lakes my whole life, and still cross over the Soo Locks almost every day, and see off and on, boats I've been on, and even had lunch.
My hunch is, they hit bottom and cracked the hull. In that big of storm, it was a death sentence.
RIP to the crew.

Certainly points to the dangers of the Great Lakes to vessels....It's an oft-forgotten 'graveyard' also. Just like the Atlantic.

I'm no oceanographer, but something to do with the wave action, I believe. Shallower water than the open ocean, so steeper waves with less distance between the wave crests.

Add to this a region with horrific winter storms, and you've got a recipe for (potential) disaster.

I just read an article where Lake Michigan just registered 21-foot waves at one of their deep water buoys. Either it's a record, or near a record. And Lake Superior's get bigger. 30-feet anyway.

RIP E.F.

Yeah I don't know much about the great lakes, but a lot of the boats for sale around there, look like they're made for the ocean.... diesel, steel hull etc.
