Angry Another Coolant and Oil Question...

I picked up a 2000 Ex Limited with a 6.8 a few months a go.
The Guy I bought it from said his mechanic told him it needs an new motor..
There was oil in the coolant But... no Coolant in the Oil...

So I changed the Oil Cooler and Rad. to rule out the Trans. cooler.

Did all that and all seamed well.
lost a little coolant here and there, But just figured that it was from air in the system.
Along with a little oil in the coolant, Which I thought it may have been what I didn't get flushed out..

Now 500 miles later I still have a little coolant loss and still some oil.

Now I have some moisture showing up on the Oil Filler cap and filler neck..

Just wanting some thoughts as far is anything I should check to rule out before I assume it is the Heads or Head Gaskets..

Any advise is appreciated.
Thanks
John

Shouldn't you do a cooling system leak down test to see where or if that's the source of your mingling fluids?

I don't know..
Is that we're you pressurize the rad?
I guess my next question would be.. If it does leak down, how do I know we're it is leaking at?

My guess about oil in the coolant is its under a higher pressure than the coolant---any leakage from close passages of the two fluids would cause the higher pressure to flow into the lower pressure area.

That is indeed where the radiator is pressurized, up to 15 PSI at most. The first thing you're looking for is whether it holds pressure or not---in this case most likely its not.

From there you'd look for external leaks which we can assume don't exist otherwise you'd see puddles on the ground.

Not sure how you'd go about testing the block separately from the heads while its still assembled.

Sorry I can't be more help---someone here should have better advice if they've experienced something similar.

I have not experienced these symptons on a V10 however what you are describing could be either hoses or gaskets. Pressure testing like JWA said is a good start. A pin hole in a hose won't leave a puddle but would be a noticable coolant loss overtime. When was the thermostat changed if ever? And have you ever changed the coolant before?

Compression test would be the next step to rule out head gasket failure. Good luck and keep us updated.

I replaced the rad hoses, thermostat at the same time as the rad.
I understand that there is more oil pressure than coolant pressure when it is running, that why I am getting oil in the coolant.
Haven't seen condensation in the oil till recently.
Which I guess once the motor is off, there is no oil pressure but coolant pressure.

I guess I'm looking for areas were there could be seepage or cross contamination.

Like is there any were else that it could happen....

It's not like I'm just loosing oil or coolant.

I just want to make sure it is the heads and or gaskets..

Compression test would only tell if the gasket is blown between the combustion chamber and valves or if the gasket is blown between the coolant passage and combustion chamber.

Normally I would charge the cylinder with air and look for air bubbling in the over flow tank.
But I'm not just loosing Coolant.
I have oil mixing with coolant..

I'm soooo confused..... Lol...

Engine Oil Cooler or head gaskets cross leaking.

I changed the Oil Cooler..
So I'm guessing Head Gasket...

Thanks
For the Replies..

Thanks
